South Alabama professor becomes university’s first Black Fulbright scholar

University of South Alabama instructor Matthew Joseph Pettway, an associate professor of Spanish, was selected as a 2024-2025 Fulbright Scholar, the university announced Monday.

He is the university’s first Black scholar to receive the prestigious award led by the U.S. government in partnership with more than 160 countries. Pettway represents one of over 800 scholars selected this year.
