Saturday area softball tourney roundup: Hewitt-Trussville starts title defense

Class 7A top-ranked Hewitt-Trussville started its title defense with a 14-1 victory over Oak Mountain in Area 6 first round action on Saturday.

The Huskies scored a run in the first inning and exploded for 13 in the second to put the game out of reach. Hewitt-Trussville sent 17 batters to the plate and had 9 singles in the inning.

Olivia Faggard and Corey Goguts each had 3 RBIs in the game, Goguts 2-for-4 with 2 runs and Faggard 2-for-3 with a run. Zaylen Tucker was 2-for-2 with 3 runs.

Sara Phillips pitched the 5 inning mercy run rule game, striking out 11 and allowing only 2 hits with no earned runs.

Spain Park downed Chelsea 6-1 in the other first round game of the double-elimination tournament.

Hewitt-Trussville plays Spain Park in winners bracket play on Monday with the winner securing a spot in regional play. Oak Mountain plays Chelsea in elimination action.

All teams winning to the area championship game advance to regional tournaments starting on May 6.
