Baseball Roundup: Baker, Fairhope, Central-Phenix City, Auburn sweep
Nolan Phillips homered in both games Friday night as Fairhope swept Mary G. Montgomery 10-1, 8-2 in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.
The Pirates (28-11) scored at least one run in each of the first five innings in the opener and cruised to the win. They took advantage of seven Mary G. Montgomery errors.
Phillips homered, drove in two and scored two. Blake Westry went 2-for-4. Miles Drew Johnson went the distance for the win, allowing six hits and one run. He struck out nine. Starter Cody Strickhausen took the loss for the Vikings. He gave up nine runs but only four were earned.
Phillips was 2-for-4 in Game 2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Rock Gearhart was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin Rehorn was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Bryon Martin also had two hits.
William Sparks pitched 6.1 innings to get the win, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out 12.
Fairhope will travel to No. 3 Auburn next week for the quarterfinals.
CLASS 7A
Auburn 3-7, Enterprise 1-0
Auburn earned the sweep behind strong pitching as the Tigers’ staff allowed only 7 hits while striking out 24 in the double-header.
Peyton Etheredge picked up the Game 2 shutout victory, striking out 8 and giving up a hit in 4 innings while Killean Blackmon threw the final 3 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 6.
Game 1 starter Michael Daniel surrendered 3 hits and struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings while reliever Tanner Waldrop got the final 2 outs, allowing a hit.
Auburn scored 5 runs in the third inning of Game 2 and added 2 more in the fifth.
Henry Allen was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run in Game 2 while Braden Fox was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and 2 runs. Jackson Mills was also 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
The Tigers got all the runs they needed in the fifth inning of Game 1 when Walton Williams and Etheredge each drove home runs on bunts and Waldrop’s RBI single made it 3-0.
Walker Turner had a double and RBI for Enterprise.
Auburn hosts Fairhope in next week’s quarterfinal round.
Central-Phenix City 3-7, Prattville 1-1
The fourth-ranked Red Devils swept their first-round matchup to improve to 35-3.
In the opener, Central scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on Landon Beaver’s two-run homer to right field to break a 1-1 tie. Beaver finished with all three Red Devil RBIs. He also had a double. Cam Norton scattered six hits and allowed a run in six innings. He struck out 10. Brody Stamp pitched the final inning for the save.
Emory Yohn went 3-for4 with three runs scored in the second game. Beaver added to more RBIs. Hunter Wippert pitched the first four innings and got the win. He allowed five hits and one run. Jordan Balkcum pitched two innings of shutout baseball and Yohn pitched the final inning.
The Red Devils will play Baker in the quarterfinals next week.
Baker 3-7, Daphne 1-1
Bryant Durbin picked up the victory in Game 1, scattering four hits and allowing one run. Durbin escaped a first-inning jam, allowing a pair of singles and giving up a run.
“I was just settling in,” he said. “After that first inning, I found the zone and was able to get ground balls and go the distance.”
Hunter Peavy led the Hornets at the plate. He reached on an error in the third inning that allowed a pair of runners to score and gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Peavy added an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Bryson Sudduth held the Trojans scoreless through six innings in Game 2 before giving up a run in the seventh. He struck out eight.
“Starting pitching really carried us tonight,” Baker coach Tyler Minto said. “We’ve got faith in our guys, and they just took control of things.”
Every Hornet reached base in Game 2. Peyton Buck led the way three hits and a pair of runs batted in.
“Our motto is just grind at the plate and put pressure on the defense and good things will happen,” Minto said. The Hornets scored a pair of runs in the third inning with two outs to stretch the lead to 5-0.
“That was huge for us,” said Minto.
Baker (29-5) will play Central-Phenix City in the quarterfinals next week.

CLASS 6A
Mountain Brook 12-5, Mortimer Jordan 2-4
Third-ranked Mountain Brook scored 2 seventh inning runs in Game 2 to earn the sweep over host Mortimer Jordan.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the final inning, the Spartans (29-6) got a run-scoring double from James Graphos and pinch hitter Bennett Love singled home Trey Vinson for the game-winner.
Mortimer Jordan scored its 4 runs in the third inning when Isaiah Brown stroked a 2-run single after a Braylon Disko’s bases-loaded walk and Garrett Ames’ RBI-single, all coming with two outs.
Mountain Brook got 3 third inning runs on an RBI-single by Hunter Keller, a sacrifice fly from Love and Paul Barnett’s bases-loaded walk.
Ty Shotts came in to pitch the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing a hit and striking out 5 to pick up the win.
The Spartans got all the runs they needed in the first inning of Game 1 on a 2-run triple by pitcher John Robicheaux and Love’s RBI single.
Starter Robicheaux did the rest, striking out 8 while allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in the game shortened to 6 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Barnett was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs and Sam Estes was 2-for3 with an RBI and 2 runs.
CLASS 5A
Valley 7-1, St. Paul’s 4-2
Bradley Irish scattered four hits and allowed one run as No. 3 St. Paul’s salvaged a split with Valley in their best-of-3 series.
The deciding game is set for noon Saturday.
Irish struck out seven and walked five in the nightcap. St. Paul’s (23-11) scored two runs in the top of the first, and Irish made it stand up. The Saints scored when Brooks McDonald was hit by a pitch. Taylor O’Dell had a sacrifice for the second run. C.J. Chambley took the loss for Valley (23-5).
In the opener, Jackson Sanders pitched six innings to get the win for the Rams. He struck out 10, walked seven and gave up three hits and two runs. Valley led 3-2 entering the seventh before tacking on four runs. The Saints scored twice in the bottom half, but it wasn’t enough.
John Stowers homered for St. Paul’s. Matthew McDonald, Ty Monteith and Mason Yarbrough each had two hits for Valley.
CLASS 4A
American Christian 9-3, Satsuma 0-0
No. 10 American Christian swept past Satsuma on the road to improve to 23-6 overall. The Gators finished 21-10.
ACA pounded out 16 hits in the opener. Jackson Willingham, Caleb Lockridge and Evan Lightsey each drove in two runs. Lightsey was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Addison Goodman pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 for the win. Jansen Banashak took the loss for Satsuma.
Coltyn Mitchell went the distance in the second game, allowing just three hits and striking out 10. Lightsey homered and drove in two.
ACA will play either Oak Grove or Andalusia in the quarterfinals.
CLASS 4A
Bibb County 8-12, Munford 3-2
Top-ranked Bibb County (30-3) scored 11 runs in the first four innings of Game 2, including a 6-run fourth inning, to earn the sweep.
Dawson Shoults was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the Game 2 victory while W Alston, Matthew Cash and Ethan McMillan each had a double.
Shoults also pitched the win, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs in 3 innings.
The Choctaws broke a 3-all tie with 5 runs over the final four innings in Game 1.
Cash led the attack with 3 RBIs, a 2-run double and bases-loaded walk. McMillan was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Blake Dailey was 2-for3 with and RBI and a run and Landon Shoults had a hit, RBI and scored 3 runs.
Macain McMillan pitched the complete game win, striking out 7.
Munford’s Mason Brewer had double and 2 RBIs while B Nichols had a double and RBI and L Stephens added a double.
CLASS 2A
Bayshore Christian 7-5, G.W. Long 1-4
Junior Jack Malone led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to give Bayshore Christian a walk-off win over No. 2 G.W. Long and a sweep of the best-of-3 series.
Malone, who recovered from a broken foot suffered during football season, hit a 3-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for the victory in Skipperville. He was 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the win. He also pitched in relief in the game. Ben Whiteside got the final out in the top of the seventh to get the victory. Brooks Jones went 2-for-2.
In the opener, Bayshore scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. The Eagles tacked on two more in the sixth. They overcame five errors to get the victory.
Malone went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits and allowing just one unearned run. He struck out three and walked one. Jace Jones went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Cory Parker also had two hits.
Bayshore (16-12) will play either Pike Liberal Arts or Cottonwood in the quarterfinals next week. G.W. Long finished 18-11.
