Driver allegedly strikes several police cars as Vestavia Hills traffic stop leads to chase on I-65

A man is in custody after a police chase that started in Vestavia Hills and ended in northern Jefferson County.

Officers tried to carry out a traffic stop about 4 a.m. Friday in Vestavia Hills for a traffic violation. The adult male driver refused to stop, police officials said, and a chase ensued along Interstate 65 northbound.

Capt. Mike Keller said the driver struck several police vehicles before eventually stopping on I-65 southbound at mile marker 266 near Fultondale.

During the chase, a Vestavia Hills police cruiser and a state trooper vehicle collided near Daniel Payne Drive.

No injuries were reported.

Keller said the suspect was arrested on multiple charges. He is being held in the Vestavia Hills City Jail pending additional charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
