Printing for Change: Huntsville’s Green Pea Press lends a hand for local non-profits

Rachel Lackey and Martin Blanco are partners in the Green Pea Press, a print making business on Governors Drive in Huntsville. The business, which started at Lowe Mill in 2010-11 was a collective for artists who collaborated on print making works.

The business is now known for t-shirts it designs and prints for local charities and non-profits in a campaign called Printing for Change, in which it allows the organizations to keep all of the profit for their fundraising campaigns.

Lackey, who is the owner, and Blanco, who is the operations manager, recently participated in a question-and-answer session with the Lede, discussing the challenges of owning a small business and their Printing for Change campaign.

How did the business start?

Rachel Lackey: I started in 2010, but we incorporated in 2011 as a community print making studio. After I graduated from UAH, I didn’t have access to print making equipment anymore, and I’d been part of Lowe Mill since the beginning, so I knew a lot of other artists there.
