Man who shot himself during police chase, crashed into UAB building has died

A man who shot himself during a police chase earlier this week has died.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Antonio Dewayne Davidson. He was 35 and lived in Birmingham.

The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.

Homewood police Sgt. John Carr said investigators with the department’s Special Operations Unit had an SUV under surveillance for most of the day for possible drug activity.

They attempted to stop the vehicle at 2:05 p.m. on Green Springs Highway and Davidson refused to stop.

The female passenger inside the SUV told police that as they approached the intersection of Sixth Avenue South and Eighth Street South on UAB’s campus, Davidson pulled a gun and shot himself in the head.

The SUV continued a short distance and then crashed into UAB’s 801 Building. There was no damage to the building.

Davidson was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday.

The witness was taken into custody for questioning.

Homewood police, as well as Birmingham police and UAB police, responded to the scene.
