Former Alabama linebacker getting back on field in UFL
The Houston Roughnecks have signed former Alabama linebacker Christopher Allen, the United Football League announced on Tuesday night.
Allen’s most recent game that counted in the standings came on Sept. 4, 2021, when the linebacker suffered a broken foot in Alabama’s season-opening 44-13 victory over Miami (Fla.).
Allen was not selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he signed with the Denver Broncos as a rookie free agent.
Allen made limited appearances in Denver’s offseason practices. But he was not able to participate in training camp and spent the 2022 season on injured reserve.
In 2023, Allen was on the field for 50 defensive snaps and 10 special-teams plays in three preseason games. But when the Broncos trimmed their 90-player preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, Allen was waived with an injury designation because of a groin problem.
After he went unclaimed on waivers, Allen reverted to Denver’s injured reserve. On Sept. 4, the Broncos waived Harris from injured reserve with an injury settlement.
The Roughnecks already have one linebacker from Alabama – Reuben Foster.
Houston is coming off its first victory in four games this season – a 17-9 victory over the Arlington Renegades on Sunday.
The Roughnecks play the Birmingham Stallions at 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at Rice Stadium in Houston. FOX will televise the game.
Allen also had an injury-marred college career at Alabama. In addition to the 2021 foot injury, he redshirt in 2018 because of a knee injury after playing in seven games as a freshman in 2017. Allen came back to lead the SEC in tackles for loss in 2020 for the Crimson Tide’s undefeated CFP national-championship team.
