Alabama troopers investigate after metal beam goes through windshield on I-65, kills driver

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in the investigation into the death of a Gardendale man killed when debris struck his SUV on I-65.

Jason H. Fields, 41, was driving a 2021 Ford Bronco on I-65 about a mile south of Warrior Monday when authorities said a small metal beam hit his windshield.

The metal beam is believed to be road debris that had fallen from another vehicle but the source of the debris and the time it fell from the source is unknown.

ALEA Senior Trooper Vu Quang said there were no markings on the object.

The incident happened at 10:59 a.m. and Fields was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:15 a.m.

Trooper investigators are trying to determine the origin of the beam, such as if it fell from another vehicle and, if so, a description of that vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call troopers at 205-322-4691.
