Yankees’ Aaron Boone ejected five pitches into game, umpire blames him for heckle from fan

Aaron Boone’s day last five pitches.

On Monday, the New York Yankees manager was ejected before the first out was recorded when the umpire thought it was Boone who heckled him. In fact, it was a fan as seen during the broadcast.

The Yankees and the Oakland Athletics had opened a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

It all started when Athletics leadoff hitter Esteury Ruiz was hit by a pitch. The ball hit Ruiz on the foot, but the Yankees thought Ruiz swung at it.

Boone had words with plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

“You’re not yelling at me,” Wendelstedt yelled at Boone. “I did what I was supposed to do and checked. I’m looking for him to get hit by the pitch. You got anything else to say, you’re gone.”

On the next pitch, he tossed Boone.

Wendelstedt heard someone in Boone’s direction. The television broadcast shows Boone just standing there silent. Boone, upon the ejection, ran out to explain to Wendelstedt it was a fan who made the comments.

“I don’t care who said it,” Wendelstedt said. “You’re gone.”

“What do you mean, you don’t care?” Boone said. “I did not say a word. It was up above our dugout. Bulls—! Bulls—! I didn’t say anything. I did not say anything, Hunter. I didn’t say a (expletive) thing.”
