Video captures people pulling bear cubs from tree to take selfies

A now-viral video taken earlier this week shows a group of people outside an North Carolina apartment complex yanking two black bear cubs out of a tree to take selfies with them.

The video shows a woman excitedly posing for photos, while a man is seen pulling the other cub out of the tree. One of the cubs can be heard shrieking and then running away as the woman chases after it.

A release from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) says one of the people was bitten.

The NCWRC was contacted by the local sheriff’s department. Staff arrived and later located one of the cubs in a retention pond. That cub was transported to a license cub rehabilitation facility, while the other has not been found.

The NCWRC’s Ashley Hobbs noted the cub they found was in poor condition.

“The cub appeared to be lethargic and frightened,” Hobbs said. “It looked to be favoring one of its front paws and was wet and shivering,” said Hobbs.

“The cub’s condition is likely a result of the unnecessary and irresponsible actions of the people involved,” said Colleen Olfenbuttel, Game Mammals and Surveys Supervisor.

Officials said they are hopeful the second cub was able to reunite with its mother “because it would not survive on its own at this young age,” according to Mountain Operations Supervisor James Tomberlin.

The woman who took the video, Rachel Staudt, also lives in the apartment complex where the incident occurred.

“I tried telling them to stop,” she told USA Today, “but they wouldn’t listen, so I thought recording it might help get justice.”

Staudt said the cubs have previously been seen near the complex, but residents typically “have enough common sense” to leave them alone.

Although they have not been publicly identified, the people seen in the video are being investigated for violating laws against disturbing bear dens.

“We did follow up with the people who pulled the bear out of the tree,” Hobbs told ABC13 in Asheville, N.C. “We … let them know how irresponsible and potentially deadly it could be for that cub to be separated from its mom, especially ripped out of a tree like that.

“It is frustrating to see people be that irresponsible around wildlife.”
