7 candidates qualify to run for Alabama House seat after John Rogers’ resignation, guilty plea

Seven candidates are running to fill the Alabama House seat left vacant when longtime Rep. John Rogers pleaded guilty to federal crimes and resigned after more than four decades in the legislature.

Six Democrats and one Republican qualified to run for the House District 52 seat, representing parts of Birmingham and Jefferson County.

The special election is June 18.

The candidates include longtime political figures, a former office holder and previous office seekers.

One of them will become the district’s first new representative since Rogers won the seat in 1982.

Carlos Crum is the only candidate who qualified to run for the Republican nomination by the deadline on April 16..

Dedra Campbell, Kelvin Datcher, Eric Major, LaTanya Millhouse, Eyrika L. Parker and Frank Woodson qualified to seek the Democratic nomination.

Rogers in March resigned from office after pleading guilty to reduced federal felony charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. Federal prosecutors said he misused public money intended for Jefferson County nonprofit agencies.

State Rep. Fred Plump also resigned and pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme.

Federal prosecutors have recommended that the judge reduce Rogers’ charges and sentence him to 14 months of house arrest, followed by supervised release. He will be sentenced July 26.
