Mr. Basketball Caleb Holts talks high school, college future

The newly named Mr. Basketball in the state of Alabama plans to finish his high school career at Buckhorn.

Sophomore Caleb Holt was named the 42nd Mr. Basketball on Tuesday as the annual Alabama Sports Writers Association Banquet in Montgomery. He also was named Class 6A Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The 2023 Mr. Basketball, Labaron Philon, opted to leave Baker and finish his high school career at Link Academy in Missouri. Holt said he had no plans to play anywhere else.

“I think I’ll stick at Buckhorn for sure,” he said. “We have a great coach in coach (Patrick) Harding. We have a great support staff. I plan to stick at Buckhorn for sure.”

Holt has led the Bucks to the last two Class 6A state titles and was named MVP in both tournaments. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 20.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.4 assists for Buckhorn (23-5) this past season. He also was named the Gatorade and MaxPreps Alabama Player of the Year. He is the first sophomore to be named Mr. Basketball.

“I think I had a great season,” he said. “Nobody is perfect. We had our ups and downs. We took some losses maybe we shouldn’t have taken, but overall, it was a great season, and the goal is to go back-to-back-to-back.”

Holt is listed as the No. 3 player in the nation in the Class of 2026, according to 247 sports. His many offers include Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Houston, LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

“It’s still pretty early,” Holt said about his college future. “I’ve been on a lot of visits. I really don’t know who I like and who I don’t like right now. I’m really just enjoying the process. I’m not even close to a decision.”

Holt said he plans to spend the offseason working on becoming a point guard and more of a leader for his team.
