Salary a single person needs to live comfortably in Alabama

How much would it take for a single person to live comfortably in each U.S. state?

It’s all about location – of course.

An analysis by SmartAsset.com used MIT Living Wage Calculator to gather the basic cost of living for an individual with no children, as well as two working adults with two children. The data includes the cost of necessities such as housing, food, transportation, income tax and other miscellaneous items. Then, the analysis applied the 50/30/20 rule to determine how much a single person would need to earn to live comfortably. That rule recommends spending approximately 50% of your income on basic needs like food and housing, 30% on wants and the remaining 20% towards savings or paying off debt.

Massachusetts was identified as the most expensive state in which to live comfortably. A single adult there needs to make at least $116,022 – roughly $56 an hour – to cover basics, wants and savings. For a family of two working parents with a pair of children, the total family income will need to be about $301,184 for the same level of comfort, SmartAsset found.

It costs the least for a single adult to live comfortably in West Virginia. A single person there would need $78,790 – or just under $38 per hour. West Virginia is the third-least expensive state for a family of four, requiring $189,364 in income across needs, wants and long-term goals.

Two working adults need the least money to raise children in Mississippi. A family in Mississippi needs $177,798 to cover the three financial categories. A single adult, however, would need $82,742 to achieve the same, making Mississippi the eight-least expensive.

What about Alabama?

Alabama ranked 38th in the amount needed for a single person to live comfortably. The analysis showed a single working adult would need $83,824, or about $40.30 an hour. A family of four would need $193,606, the 44th highest.
