The NFL Draft’s Alabama roots: Pick No. 10

The 2024 NFL Draft starts on April 25 in Detroit with the 32 first-round picks. In the 88 NFL drafts, teams have chosen 128 prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges in the first round, and another 29 who were not first-rounders but were selected in the first 32 picks. AL.com is counting down to the draft by highlighting the players with Alabama football roots who have been chosen in the first 32 picks.

Four players who were the No. 10 pick in an NFL Draft are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame – running backs Marcus Allen and Jerome Bettis, defensive tackle Alex Karras and defensive back Rod Woodson.

Former Vigor High School and Auburn offensive tackle Willie Anderson has come close to making it five.

For the past three years, Anderson has reached finalist status for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s modern-era candidates. But he has not cleared the final hurdle to enshrinement yet.

The Cincinnati Bengals chose Anderson at No. 10 in the 1996 draft. He spent the next 12 seasons in the Cincinnati lineup.

Anderson received four Pro Bowl invitations and made first-team All-Pro three seasons in a row.

The three other prospects from Alabama high schools and colleges chosen at No. 10 are former Crimson Tide alumni:

· Guard Chance Warmack (Alabama): 2013 by the Tennessee Titans. Warmack started at right guard for Tennessee in his first three seasons before getting hurt in the second game of 2016 and missing the rest of the year. He came back to play on the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl LII winners.

· Offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (Alabama): 2020 by the Cleveland Browns. Wills played right tackle at Alabama, but he’s started all 53 games of his NFL career at left tackle.

· Wide receiver DeVonta Smith (Alabama): 2021 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith had more receptions and more receiving yards in his first three seasons than any other Philadelphia player has had, and he recorded a 100-yard receiving game in Super Bowl LVII.

The New York Jets hold the 10th selection in this year’s draft.
