Florida man beat roommate to death over $1, police say

A 36-year-old Miami man is charged with murder after police say he beat his roommate to death over $1, according to multiple Miami-area media reports.

An arrest report obtained by WPLG indicates the murder occurred just after 5 a.m. Friday at the apartment the two men shared. Police responded to the scene and found the suspect, identified as Brandon Carlos Grant, laying on the sidewalk outside the apartment building, with blood on the gray hoodie he was wearing.

Grant told officers he couldn’t breathe and asked for water, according to the report. Officers entered the apartment to find Grant’s roommate unresponsive, on his knees leaning on a couch. The report indicated the victim appeared to have suffered “blunt force trauma to his face.”

The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grant reportedly waived his Miranda rights and told investigators he “became enraged when the victim would not give him a dollar,” the report states. Grant said he and the victim fought and at one point the victim asked him to stop out of fear Grant would kill him.

Additional details were redacted from the report released to Miami media.

Grant has been charged with second-degree murder. He remained held without bond as of Monday.
