UFL Week 3: Another final-48-seconds, 2-score comeback

For the second week in a row, a United Football League team used the onside-kick alternative to rally in the final minute.

Last week, San Antonio Brahmas quarterback Chase Garbers threw two touchdown passes in the final 48 seconds in a 20-19 victory over the Memphis Showboats.

On Saturday, the D.C. Defenders got a touchdown and a field in the final 48 seconds to defeat the Arlington Renegades 29-28.

In the UFL’s other Week 3 games:

· The Birmingham Stallions stayed undefeated by beating the Showboats 33-14 on Saturday night behind quarterback Adrian Martinez, who threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 44 yards and one touchdown.

· Jake Bates closed the first half with a 55-yard field goal to give Michigan a one-point lead and quarterback E.J. Perry threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcus Simms 23 seconds into the second half in the Panthers’ 34-20 victory over the winless Houston Roughnecks on Sunday.

· St. Louis stopped a fourth-down snap at its 44-yard line with 16 seconds remaining to preserve the Battlehawks’ 31-24 victory over the Brahmas on Sunday. San Antonio scored a touchdown with 2:10 remaining and regained possession with 1:43 to play and all three of its timeouts after forcing St. Louis’ only punt of the game.

The Renegades had 419 yards to the Defenders’ 259, but a 57-yard kickoff return by wide receiver Chris Rowland sparked D.C.’s comeback in the final two minutes. A 1-yard touchdown run by running back Cam’Ron Harris and 2-point conversion run by quarterback Jordan Ta’amu pulled the Defenders within two points of the lead.

D.C. chose the fourth-and-12 onside-kick alternative at the 28-yard line, and Ta’amu completed a 19-yard pass to wide receiver Ty Scott. A 26-yard completion on the next play put Matthew McCrane in position to kick a 49-yard field goal on the final snap to win the game.
