Davin Cosby announces departure; 3rd Alabama basketball guard enters portal

Alabama basketball is used to turnover. A remade roster achieved something no other Tide squad had ever done before in making the Final Four. On Friday night, a third player from that group entered the transfer portal, a potential signal of more roster changes for head coach Nate Oats.

Davin Cosby Jr. announced via Instagram he will enter the portal. The guard was a rotational piece that filtered through the lineup in his lone season. His 3-point shooting offered some highlight moments. Cosby was a four-star prospect.

Cosby joined UA for last season’s run to the Sweet 16. He wasn’t eligible but participated in team practices and was on the scout team. In 22 games this season, Cosby averaged 3.6 points per game on 36.6% shooting. Cosby starred against Ole Miss on Feb. 28, where he took advantage of opportunity and Oats’ 3-point heavy scheme.

He attempted 10 3s with the Tide’s guard rotation depleted. He helped a comeback that showed a glimpse of what Alabama could be, a team that eventually made a run through some of the nation’s best in a historic run. Like Rylan Griffen and walk-on Max Scharnowksi, Cosby opted to explore future opportunities. Redshirt freshman Kris Parker also entered the portal.

As the Tide awaits the decision of its most important guards, Mark Sears and Latrell Wrightsell Jr., the Tide will reportedly host South Florida’s Chris Youngblood. He averaged 15.3 points per game on a 25-win USF season which ended in the NIT. UA has already welcomed a transfer in guard Houston Mallette.
