Masters 2024: Nick Saban on Augusta, Little Debbie snacks, more Miss Terry retirement commandments
On Friday, we were reminded Nick Saban isn’t retired, he simply isn’t the Alabama football coach anymore.
Saban joined the ESPN broadcast from Augusta during coverage of the Masters and talked about his respect for Augusta, the players, Little Debbie snacks, and, of course, Miss Terry’s commandments of retirement.
“I spent 50 years being in a hurry and didn’t even know it,” Saban said.
On Augusta
“It’s beautiful,” Saban said. “Every time I’ve been here and had the opportunity to play the course, it’s as good as you’re ever going to find anywhere. The people here are special. It’s just a unique, special place.”
In 2022, Saban revealed he played Augusta with Ken Griffey Jr.
“He was my partner, thank God,” Saban said back then. He added he plays Augusta “usually once a year.”
On golf
The 72-year-old Saban often refers to golf as a metaphor for life.
“You hit a good shot, but you still have to play the next shot, but, if you hit a bad shot, you need to overcome the adversity.
“Unfortunately for me, I’ve been doing the latter more than the former. I’m learning to overcome and be consistent.
On the players
Saban has spent time with Justin Thomas and Nick Dunlap – both from the University of Alabama standouts – and has an appreciation for two attributes golfers and college football players share: Work and preparation.
“I don’t know if people realize how much these guys work,” Saban said.
“I sat and watched Nick Dunlap hit 2 or 300 drives on the simulator to see how much spin was on the ball. … I’m like, ‘I’d just like to hit it 324 yards. I don’t care what the spin in.”
Miss Terry’s commandments
Miss Terry’s commandments of retirements Terry left him a note known as the Ten Commandments of Retirement. On that day, he shared three of them: The couch, eating and tech commandments.
“I found out if I did my chores, then I could go play golf, so I get up early so I can get my chores done,” he said Friday.
He shared two more commandments. Saban makes the bed every morning and takes out the trash.
As a side note, he referenced the 12 Commandments, not the 10. Whether he misspoke or the list grew is unclear.
Little Debbie snacks
Does he still eat oatmeal creme pies?
“Every day,” Saban said.
In fact, his reputation as a connoisseur of such snacks has already made its way to “College GameDay” set where he will spend Saturdays in the fall.
“The lady who is going to be on GameDay, she tells me she is all set with the Little Debbies,” he said. “I said, ‘At least you got your priorities, right?’”
