Man pleads guilty to 2017 murder of 26-year-old in Bessemer

A Bessemer man has pleaded guilty in the 2017 shooting death of a 26-year-old man.

Andrew Bernard Jeffery, 54, entered his guilty plea in February before Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff Circuit Judge Thomas Thrash. Killed in the Nov. 6, 2017, was Quinton Lee Sims.

Thrash sentenced Jeffery to 20 years in prison with five to serve. Once his sentenced is completed in 2029, he will serve five more years on probation.

Jeffery surrendered to the Jefferson County Jail Thursday to await transfer to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The shooting happened at 9:03 p.m. that Monday in the 1000 block of Dartmouth Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the home on a report of a shooting.

Once there, police found Sims with a single gunshot wound to the back. He was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:01 p.m.

Jeffery had surrendered shortly after the shooting.

Police at the time said the shooting was the result of an argument.
