Former WrestleMania star dead at 54
Tarō Akebono, the first foreign-born Sumo champion who made a splash at WrestleMania 21, died at age 54.
The Hawaii native died of heart failure in early April, the New York Times reported.
Born n Chadwick Haheo Rowan, Akebono began his sumo career in Japan. Akebono won his first championship in 1992 and earned 10 more titles before retiring in 2001 due to injuries.
Akebono then became a sumo coach, helping train another champion, Asashōryū Akinori.
After coaching for a couple of years, Akebono opted to compete in mixed martial arts and kickboxing. Although Akebono did not reach the same level of success in these new fighting ventures, he earned himself an appearance with WWE at WrestleMania 21 where he defeated WWE’s Big Show during a sumo match, PennLive reported
Akebono went on to compete in Japan with a career spanning from 2005 to 2015.
