Alabama singer evokes Anita Baker with ‘stunning’ cover in ‘Voice’ Knockouts

Sometimes, singing your heart out simply isn’t enough. Fans of reality TV know this only too well, and have seen plenty of talented artists leave their favorite series during shocking eliminations.

Case in point: Val T Webb’s ouster on Monday’s episode of “The Voice.” Webb, 43, a singer from Birmingham, has been a real contender on the NBC series, displaying impressive vocal skills and filling songs with emotion. She’s received rapturous praise from all the celebrity coaches during Season 25, and earned a coveted four-chair turn during the Blind Auditions.

But Webb’s charming cover of “Sweet Love,” Anita Baker’s 1986 hit, didn’t bring her a victory in Monday’s Knockout round against Nathan Chester. Although she sang well, displaying range and precision, Webb was outmatched by Chester, a Chicago singer who delivered a powerful cover of Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”

Both singers were competing on John Legend’s team, and he chose Chester as the winner of the Knockout. Legend praised Webb, calling her performance “stunning,” but said Chester was the more formidable contender.

“Nathan picked the perfect song that really embodies the kind of style of music that he wants to bring back,” Legend said. “It had power but it also had finesse in the right moments.”

Although Webb was eligible for a steal by the other coaches, which would have kept her on the show, she was eliminated. “You’re amazing, Val!” Shay Mooney shouted as Webb made her exit. (Mooney and Dan Smyers of Dan & Shay are coaching a team together.)

Webb, an experienced pro, was gracious in defeat, posting a farewell message to “Voice” followers on social media.

“What an emotional journey this has been!” Webb said in a Monday post on Facebook and Instagram. “To be leaving this show as one of the top 24 is still such a win! Acquiring a spot on this show is NOT easy. We don’t just fly to LA and audition. That’s another story for another day though .. lol. Please know that I do not feel defeated. This is an experience that I got to live out and share all because I did something afraid that I never thought I’d do after being pushed and motivated by my son who thought I belong on world stages and screens. That in itself is the honor and win for me.”

Webb, a gospel, R&B and soul singer, currently lives in New Braunfels, Texas. According to her LinkedIn profile, she served as the worship director for Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, 2020-2022, as well as The Rock Church, 2012-2015. Webb also has more than a decade of experience as a singer and director of background vocals at Audiostate 55 recording studios in Birmingham.

Another singer from Alabama, Asher HaVon, won his Knockout on Monday’s episode and will move on to a round called the Playoffs. Havon, 31, from Selma, is competing on Reba McEntire’s team.

One more “Voice” contestant from Alabama, Ducote Talmage, has yet to be featured in the Knockouts. Talmage, a country singer from Auburn, is competing on Team Dan & Shay. He’s likely to appear on the next episode, which airs April 15.

Alabama actually had five singers competing on “The Voice” during Season 25, but Rivers Grayson of Muscle Shoals and Corey Curtis, a Saraland resident, were eliminated on previous episodes.

If you watch: “The Voice” airs at 7 p.m. CT on Mondays on NBC. The series also streams on Peacock. Early episodes in the season are filmed in advance.
