The NFL Draft’s Alabama roots: Pick No. 17
The 2024 NFL Draft starts on April 25 in Detroit with the 32 first-round picks. In the 88 NFL drafts, teams have chosen 128 prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges in the first round, and another 29 who were not first-rounders but were selected in the first 32 picks. AL.com is counting down to the draft by highlighting the players with Alabama football roots who have been chosen in the first 32 picks.
Less than 10 months after the Baltimore Ravens chose Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley at No. 17 in the 2014 NFL Draft, the former Theodore High School star was playing in the Pro Bowl.
Mosley became the first Baltimore rookie chosen for the Pro Bowl, and he has been selected for the all-star honor four more times while totaling more than 1,000 tackles in nine NFL seasons.
Along the way, Mosley signed an $85 million contract with the New York Jets.
Five prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges have been chosen 17th in an NFL Draft. They encompass a range of NFL experiences.
While Mosley has had the most pro success, the most recent No. 17 pick with Alabama football roots spent the 2023 season on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.
After the Las Vegas Raiders chose Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood at No. 17 in the 2021 NFL Draft, he started the first four games of the season at right tackle before starting the remainder of the campaign at right guard while playing 1,105 offensive snaps.
Leatherwood has played only 32 offensive snaps since. Claimed on waivers by the Chicago Bears at the end of the preseason in 2022, Leatherwood played in four games before being waived at the end of the 2023 preseason. This time, he ended up with the Browns and did not play last season.
The other prospects from Alabama high schools and colleges chosen at No. 17 in an NFL Draft include:
· Back Monk Gafford (Fort Deposit, Auburn): 1943 by the Philadelphia Eagles. The second pick of the third round in 1943, Gafford didn’t reach the pros until three years after he was drafted. That’s because he was in military service in World War II. Gafford never played in the NFL, but he spent three seasons in the rival All-American Football Conference with the Miami Seahawks and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gafford led the AAFC in kickoff-return yards in 1948.
· Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (Gadsden City, Alabama): 2012 by the Cincinnati Bengals. Kirkpatrick played in 119 games in 10 seasons and intercepted 13 passes, including one that he returned for 101 yards without scoring.
· Defensive end Jonathan Allen (Alabama): 2017 by the Washington Redskins. After an injury limited him to five games as a rookie, Allen has reached 101 in seven seasons with Washington – all starting assignments. He received Pro Bowl recognition at defensive tackle in 2021 and 2022 and has recorded 39 sacks in his career.
The Jacksonville Jaguars hold the 17th selection in this year’s draft.
