In abortion statement, Trump praises Alabama lawmakers on IVF for ‘great and fast job’
Former President Donald Trump today released a video message saying that abortion rights should be left up to individual states, rather than supporting a nationwide abortion ban.
In the midst of his statement, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee also praised the Alabama Legislature for its work last month in rushing to pass a bill providing legal immunity for doctors and IVF clinics.
This came following an Alabama Supreme Court decision that ruled frozen embryos had the same legal status as children.
Here is complete coverage of the Alabama IVF ruling
Most of the state’s fertility providers paused in vitro fertilization after the court decision. Infirmary Health in Mobile, which faced several lawsuits over the destruction of frozen embryos, said it will temporarily resume IVF treatment for the rest of 2024 and then end the treatment.
In his statement, Trump said Republicans want to “make it easier for mothers and families to have babies, not harder. That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every state in America.”
“Today I’m pleased that the Alabama Legislature has acted very quickly and passed legislation that preserves the availability of IVF in Alabama,” the former president said on Truth Social. “They really did a great and fast job.”
Trump went on to say that abortion, following the overturning of the Roe V. Wade decision last year by the U.S. Supreme Court, is “where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint.”
He took credit for the Dobbs V. Jackson decision – presumably for naming three conservative high court justices during his term – saying he is “proudly the person responsible.” He went on to falsely claim that “all legal scholars both sides, wanted and, in fact, demanded” the 1973 Roe decision be ended.
“The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land,” he said. “In this case, the law of the state. Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day this is all about the will of the people. You must follow your heart, or in many cases your religion or your faith.”
Trump went on to say that, like Ronald Reagan, he favors exceptions for “rape, incest and life of the mother.”
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, a group opposed to abortion rights, said she was “deeply disappointed” in Trump’s position, according to the Associated Press.
“Unborn children and their mothers deserve national protections and national advocacy from the brutality of the abortion industry. The Dobbs decision clearly allows both states and Congress to act,” she said.
