Solar eclipse weather update: Looking better for some

Today’s the day for the much-anticipated solar eclipse.

The total eclipse of the sun will occur between 12:33 and 3:20 CDT today. Alabama is not all that close to the path of totality and will only see a partial eclipse, according to astronomers.

And some Alabamians may not get to see even that, with clouds expected to be in the way for some skywatchers.

But the forecast has improved for some parts of the state, namely in the east.

The National Weather Service has a sky cover forecast, and the numbers are looking better for parts of eastern Alabama around eclipse time. The sky cover forecast for 1 p.m. CDT is below:

There’s a solar eclipse today, but clouds could get in the way for some wanting to see it. Alabama will only see a partial eclipse. Above is the sky cover forecast for 1 p.m. CDT Monday. Areas with lower numbers are expected to have fewer clouds to get in the way of the eclipse.NWS

It is forecasting fewer clouds for areas such as Dothan and Auburn, and even areas around Birmingham are forecast to be less cloudy than previous forecasts.

North and much of west Alabama is still out of luck, however, and is expected to have mostly cloudy skies at eclipse time. Rain and storms were moving across north Alabama on Monday morning and were expected to continue into the afternoon hours.
