SEC announces Georgia-Miss. State baseball suspensions as benches cleared, 11 ejected
The SEC announced one-game suspensions for Sunday’s Georgia at Mississippi State baseball game, following an incident in Saturday’s game between the schools.
During the top of the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-2 Georgia win, Georgia’s Dillon Carter was thrown out at the plate after a tag by catcher Johnny Long, who then stood over Carter and looks to knee him several times.
The play resulted in both benches clearing. After video review during the game, players from both teams were ejected and subject to suspension.
Here are the players suspended:
Mississippi State (20-12, 5-6):
- No. 18 Johnny Long
- No. 40 Logan Kohler
Georgia (24-7, 5-6):
- No. 11 Henry Hunter
- No. 13 Fernando Gonzalez
- No. 42 Daniel Padysak
The ejections on Saturday night were the result of the application of NCAA Rule 5.16.c, which states that team personnel who leave their position to potentially participate in a verbal altercation or physical confrontation shall be ejected and suspended for one game.
Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, calling the incident absurd.
“The process and outcome of last night’s 8th inning in our game against Georgia, was absurd, ridiculous and embarrassing on so many levels,” he posted. “I understand why so many are outraged, as am I. …We will always fight for our players, for our fans and for Mississippi State.”
