How did Auburn’s QBs fare in the spring game? Here’s a breakdown of their performances

All spring, Auburn’s quartet of scholarship quarterbacks split reps at practice.

On April 2, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said incumbent starter Payton Thorne would “still be in the lead, pole position come fall camp.”

However, both Hank Brown and Holden Geriner were nipping at Thorne’s heels, Freeze added.

Meanwhile, true freshman and former 4-star prospect Walker White spent the spring “swimming” after having enrolled in January and then being tasked with catching up to speed with the Auburn offense.

“As excited as we are about Walker, the other three will get the majority of the reps come fall camp,” Freeze said. “But I’m real excited about Walker, too, so we’ll see. It’s going to be hard to get four. We’ve done a good job getting them a bunch of reps in spring.”

And during Auburn’s A-Day spring game, the trend continued as all four quarterbacks got looks Saturday afternoon in a game that Auburn’s offense came from behind to win 28-27.

Thorne, unsurprisingly, being the first to trot out onto the field.

Geriner was next in line, followed by Brown and then White.

Brown was the first to cause a stir on Saturday as his first pass of the afternoon went for a 49-yard completion to freshman wide receiver and former 5-star prospect Cam Coleman. Brown and Coleman’s connection in the first quarter went on to be the biggest play of the afternoon.

Thorne also made a pair of nice throws — one 40-yard completion to Georgia State transfer receiver Robert Lewis and a 34-yard touchdown pass to Coleman.

“To see us make some explosive plays in the passing game was really good,” Freeze said after the game.

Meanwhile, White completed a trio of 20-plus-yard passes to Camden Brown, Greg McConico Jr. and Dylan Gentry.

With Saturday’s spring game putting a bookend on Auburn’s spring camp, Freeze was walked away pleased with the Tigers’ quarterback play.

“I think we got better this spring of understanding, kind of, what the expectations are from that position in running our offense,” said Freeze, who spent the game standing on the field, directly behind whoever was under center.

“Honestly, I felt like standing back there today that most of the decisions were correct. Now, I didn’t always like some of the throws that were made. But I did think in the run, RPO game that most of the decisions were correct.”

All four quarterbacks finished the afternoon without committing a turnover, all while totaling 365 passing yards on a combined 26-for-49 passing effort.

Here’s a complete breakdown of each quarterback’s performance:

Payton Thorne — 9/13, 133 yards, TD, 20 rushing yards

Hank Brown — 5/12, 103 yards

Walker White — 5/13, 83 yards

Holden Geriner — 7/10, 46 yards
