Right at home: Auburn native Towns McGough settles in quick during A-Day spring game

Towns McGough been there before — eyeing a deep, deep field goal of more than 50 yards.

During his senior season at Auburn High last fall, McGough split the uprights from more than 50 yards out six times — a state record. And considering one of those six kicks came from 60 yards out, when McGough trotted out onto the field to attempt a 58-yard field goal with the spring game on the line, he knew he was capable.

“I just kind of thought back to high school,” McGough said. “I’ve done this plenty of times and have confidence in myself.”

However, McGough, who enrolled at Auburn University in January, had never lined up for a kick that long in an orange and blue Auburn uniform — much less one that would decide the winner of Saturday’s A-Day spring game.

But it was no trouble for the true freshman, who nailed the 58-yard game-winning field goal to lift Auburn’s offense to a 28-27 win on Saturday afternoon in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“How about our freshman, Towns, just acting like it was kind of a normal thing. Had zero issues with any nervous or timing. Seemed very, very calm and didn’t get sped up in his motions,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said of McGough. “Then the kick, I think it would have been good from 65. It hit way up on the upright.”

After the make, which happened in front of a reported 33,526 fans, McGough was mobbed by his new teammates.

“I had a little adrenaline rush and rushed toward the field goal and they followed me,” McGough said. “It was fun, though, and super cool.”

McGough’s game-winner came after he’d already tallied six made field goals on the day, which effectively kept Auburn’s offense afloat in the game.

To the surprise of no one the team, McGough finished the day without a miss having gone 7-for-7 with makes from 26, 33, 34, 36, 43, 49 and 58 yards out.

“I mean, I don’t think our kickers missed in practice, so we knew,” said Auburn defensive back Jerrin Thompson. “So it wasn’t unexpected at all.”

With Alex McPherson, Auburn’s incumbent starting kicker nursing a hamstring injury and not playing in the spring game, Saturday was about as full-circle as it gets for McGough, who grew up in Auburn.

Prior to the spring game, McGough’s father reminded him of some of his first experiences at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“My first time really getting the experience was as a kid, the moment I remember, was I competed in the punt, pass competitions when I was a kid,” McGough recalled. “Third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade — got to be on at halftime at the A-Day game as a kid. To actually be on the field today and actually compete was a feeling like no other.”

Saturday’s opportunity was the result of McGough choosing to take a preferred walk-on offer from the Tigers in December. McGough had other opportunities, such as Ole Miss, but chose to stay close to home.

And on Saturday, McGough reaped the benefits of his decision.

“Being a hometown kid, as soon as I walked off that bus in Tiger Walk, I remember myself being one of those kids shaking the guys hands,” McGough said. “Being one of those guys today and stepping on that field was a real just drop in my heart just being on the team and getting field goals all day today and helping them win.

“It was really a dream. It really is.”
