‘A beautiful soul’: Family mourns Birmingham woman killed in hail of rifle fire before crashing into apartment building

Family and friends are mourning the death of a 33-year-old Birmingham mother who died in a hail of gunfire before crashing into an apartment complex.

The deadly shooting was the first of three in city between Friday morning and Sunday morning. Killed was Jasmine Clevette Price.

“Jazzy was a beautiful soul,’’ said her older sister, Raquel Jackson. “Her spirit was so bright, and she knew how to have a good time and make you laugh.

The rifle fire erupted in a Birmingham’s College Hills neighborhood Friday.

Multiple shots were reported about 11 a.m. in the 800 block of First Street West. The city’s gunfire detection system picked up 14 rounds in one location and three in another.

In all, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald, police believe at least 40 rounds were fired, possibly from multiple weapons.

Moments later, a white SUV crashed into a small apartment building and burst into flames.

Price was still inside the SUV.

Once firefighters extinguished the flames, they found Price inside the wreckage. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

A man and woman inside the apartment were not injured.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting wasn’t random.

“She was loving, giving, genuine, caring and just someone you can truly count on,’’ Jackson said. “No matter your situation, if Jasmine can help, you better know she was coming.”

“That’s what led to her death, helping someone,’’ her sister said. “Giving someone a ride.”

Price leaves behind her husband, Ladarius, and 4-year-old daughter Jasity. Family said she was a dedicated mother.

“She was a mother, wife, daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, niece and a friend to many,’’ Jackson said.

“For her to be snatched away as an innocent victim from the joy and love of her over a senseless violent crime has torn the family to pieces,’’ Jackson said.

“She was the best little sister and big sister to her five siblings,’’ she said. “They meant the world to each other before she got her baby girl and even more so after.”

No arrests have been announced.

To the shooter or shooters, Jackson said this, “You guys have no idea the damage you have done and we the family of Jasmine Price hope you sons of (expletives) rot in Hell.”
