Man gets 10 years in prison for raping teen in Prattville restaurant bathroom

A man has pleaded guilty in the 2023 rape of a teen girl in the bathroom of a Prattville restaurant.

Grevi Geovani Rivera-Zavala, 29, of Honduras was initially charged with first-degree rape.

District Attorney for the 19th Circuit CJ Robinson announced Wednesday that Rivera-Zavala pleaded guilty to second-degree rape.

Autauga County Circuit Court Judge Joy Booth sentenced Rivera-Zavala to 10 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Once his sentence is completed, Rivera-Zavala will be released into the custody of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

Rivera-Zavala entered the U.S. illegally, was briefly detained, and then was then released despite the fact that he had a criminal record, Robinson said.

The incident happened in May 2023 at Poblanos restaurant on Prattville’s Cobbs Ford Road.

The victim told police the man forced her into a stall in the women’s bathroom, removed her clothing, held her down and raped her, according to charging documents against Rivera-Zavala.

The two did not know each other.

“This is a crime which shocked our community,’’ Robinson said. “My office worked with the victim’s family and the Prattville Police Department in order to seek accountability and justice for innocence lost.”

“Due to the seriousness of this crime and the victim’s age, I am thankful to have permanently removed this threat to public safety,’’ he said. “I pray our federal government adopts stronger immigration policies to identify and prevent dangerous illegals from entering our country looking to commit criminal acts.”

“Countless people have peacefully come to the United States looking for a better life, many become part of their local communities, and pay taxes,’’ Robinson said. “None of those traits describe Rivera-Zavala, he was a threat, his history showed that, and failed policies allowed for this crime to occur.”
