Alabama man pleads guilty to 2002 Flint, Michigan sexual assault of child who got pregnant

An Alabama man accused of sexually assaulting an underage girl and getting her pregnant has pleaded guilty in Michigan to 31 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to prosecutors.

Tyrone Anthony Jones, a 53-year-old resident of Scottsboro, and former Flint resident, sexually assaulted the victim dozens of times while she was living in Flint with Jones and his wife between 2002 and 2003, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in a Tuesday, April 2, news release.

The victim became pregnant by Jones and delivered the baby when she was 13, according to the release.

“The wheels of justice may turn slowly but they never stop turning and today, justice was served with the conviction of Tyrone Anthony Jones,” Leyton said in a statement. “I want to credit the survivor of these appalling sexual assaults for showing tremendous strength and courage for coming forward to make sure that Jones was held accountable for his unforgivable acts.”

Jones moved to Alabama after the assaults. The victim and her child also moved to another state, according to prosecutors.

The victim came forward and made a formal criminal complaint with the Flint Police Department in September 2022. Jones was charged three months later.

The charges were able to be filed 20 years after the fact because there’s no statute of limitations for first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Michigan, the prosecutor’s office said.

Jones is being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail. He’s scheduled to be sentenced before Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth A. Kelly on May 6.
