Beloved security officer killed alongside his dog in horrific Birmingham crash
Friends and family are mourning the death of a beloved security officer killed in a horrific crash on a west Birmingham street nearly one week ago.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the fatality victim as Browyn Lavar Fortner. Friends said he went by Bronwyn Fortner.
He was 46 and lived in Birmingham.
Fortner’s dog, Sky, also died in the crash.
The wreck happened just after 5:31 p.m. on Thursday, March 28 in the 2600 block of Jefferson Avenue. Fortner was driving an older Crown Victoria and was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
Fortner was pronounced dead on the scene at 6 p.m.
The driver of the other vehicle – a woman – was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. No additional information has been released.
A crowd gathered following the deadly crash and at least one person did a Facebook Live video of the aftermath, showing the victim dead inside of is vehicle. That video was later removed.
Fortner was a former police officer in Birmingham, Brighton, Lipscomb, Fairfield and Harpersville. He was a well-known, much-loved security officer at several places including Midfield’s Piggly Wiggly and Legacy Prep charter school.
“He was loved by so many,’’ said his best friend, Jefferson County sheriff’s Deputy Truman Sampson.
There was an outpouring of grief on social media by those who loved him.
“You were a dynamic person and friend,’’ wrote one woman. “You always encouraged others and and always had a kind heart.”
“You always had a kind spirit and joyful heart,’’ wrote another. “You always protected us and watched out.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
