Report: Bronny James set to leave USC for transfer portal
Bronny James, son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, will leave USC and enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report Tuesday by New York Daily News sports writer Dick Weiss.
The younger James averaged 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game for the Trojans as a freshman this season. The 6-foot-4 guard missed the first eight games of the season after suffering a heart-related incident during summer workouts, but averaged 19.4 minutes in the 25 games he did play.
James’ apparent decision to leave USC comes after Trojans coach Andy Enfield jumped to SMU, which will join the ACC next season. Current Arkansas coach Eric Musselman is reportedly among those interviewing for the USC opening.
A McDonald’s All-American at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, Bronny James was rated the No. 19 overall recruit in the 2023 class by ESPN.com. There have been rumors since his high school days he would jump to the NBA after his freshman season so that he could play alongside his father — who is now 39 and playing in his 21st NBA season — but that seems less likely after he hardly dominated on the college level.
Where the 19-year-old James might head next is unclear. Oregon and Ohio State (his father’s childhood favorite team) were his other two finalists when he signed with USC in May 2023.
