How does Jason Kelce’s retirement affect Tyler Steen?

Tyler Steen will not be the center for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 NFL season.

After 13 seasons in that position, Jason Kelce announced his retirement last month. While Steen is not a center, both of Philadelphia’s guards – Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens – can play the position, which might open a spot in the starting lineup for Steen.

“He’s versatile,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said of Steen while attending the NFL’s annual meeting, “and I think he can do a lot of different things, so when you get guys that are versatile, there’s flexibility there with what you can do with them, what piece goes where, but we’re excited about him.

“Obviously, you know how I feel and everybody feels about (offensive-line) Coach (Jeff) Stout(land). He’s going to get the best out of these guys, and Tyler’s going to benefit from that coaching. And Tyler’s also going to benefit because he’s a really good player that we took in the third round, so excited about his development, some of the minutes that he got last year, and I think that he is a great option, and we’ll see what happens.”

A transfer from Vanderbilt, Steen played left tackle for Alabama in the 2022 season. After joining Philadelphia as the 65th selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Steen played 71 offensive snaps as a rookie.

Steen got 62 of those in his lone NFL start as the right guard in a 28-23 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 5.

Philadelphia’s 2022 NFC championship team returned its offensive line except for right guard Isaac Seumalo, who left in free agency for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Eagles opened the season with Cam Jurgens in that spot. A second-round draft choice in 2022 by the Eagles with an eye toward Kelce’s successor, Jurgens moved to guard for 2023 when the Philadelphia center decided last offseason to play another year.

But with Jurgens in the final week of a five-game stay on injured reserve and Sua Opeta out with a hip injury sustained in the previous game, Steen got his chance to play.

Opeta left in free agency for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason.

Sirianni said it’s not a foregone conclusion that Jurgens will shift to center to fill the Kelce vacancy. Dickerson won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center for Alabama’s 2020 undefeated national-championship team, but he went right into the lineup as a guard after being chosen in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

In the Eagles’ final game of the 2023 regular-season, Philadelphia gave Kelce a second-half rest before the playoffs, and Dickerson worked at center for 33 snaps.

“I don’t have to make that decision for a long, long time,” Sirianni said about Philadelphia’s starting center in 2024, “and so, we’ll see. We got a lot of time. We got walkthroughs to go through, we got training camp, we got OTAs.

“As far as what that looks like, Cam’s got a ton of reps. If it is Cam, he’s got a ton of reps doing that, too. Jason didn’t take every snap at center last year in practice. I’m really confident he can do it. I’m really confident, but we’ll see what happens.”

In addition to returning its guards, Philadelphia will have its tackles back for 2024 in Jordan Mailata on the left and Lane Johnson on the right.

Johnson is a five-time Pro Bowler and a two-time first-team All-Pro. Dickerson has been a Pro Bowler for the past two seasons.

“I’m really excited about that group that we have,” Sirianni said about Philadelphia’s offensive line. “We’ve had great offensive-line play over the last three years that I’ve been here. Obviously, we’re losing one of the best players in not only Eagle history but NFL history, one of the best centers of all-time, so obviously there’s going to be things that we got to work to replace with that. But what’s great is these guys have been around Jason for three, four, five, six, seven years.

“And so, we’ll see who that is at center. We’ll see who that is at right guard. But I know we got a lot of good pieces.”
