New on Netflix April 2024: ‘Ripley’, ‘Sex and the City’, more worth streaming
Spring streaming has arrived, with some terrific options courtesy of one of the biggest platforms.
Netflix has a healthy handful of beloved movies you can start watching right now, from comedy cult classics like “Happy Gilmore” to action masterpieces like “The Matrix.”
They’ll even offer up some new original content that will keep you glued to the TV this month, unless of course you binge it all in one night.
Below are five things you should stream in April, plus everything new coming to the streaming service.
American Graffiti
The right of passage in the American public school system certainly doesn’t apply to everyone, but George Lucas nailed the tone of teenagers facing an uncertain future. The film drips with the guise of nostalgia, propelled by a memorable pop music soundtrack, but it also permeates with the angst of young people faced with difficult questions and lofty expectations. Features Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and Harrison Ford. (Now streaming)
Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver
Kora and surviving warriors prepare to defend Veldt, their new home, alongside its people against the Realm. The warriors face their pasts, revealing their motivations before the Realm’s forces arrive to crush the growing rebellion. The second part of Zack Snyder’s original space opera, obviously and heavily influenced by “Star Wars.” The first film got panned, but you know what? Finish what you’ve started…
Ripley
Andrew Scott stars as a grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s, who is hired by a wealthy man to begin a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder in Steven Zaillian’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” If you’ve seen the 1999 film of the same name, you know the richness of the characters and story. Late director Anthony Minghella did it so beautifully, it’s hard to know why we needed another take. But Zaillian’s show looks visually ambitious, and Scott is one of the best actors working today.
Sex and the City (seasons 1-6)
Darren Star’s groundbreaking HBO series chronicling the lives of four women in New York remains one of the network’s greatest achievements and pioneer in the advent of “peak TV.” Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon star, not to mention the slew of guest stars.
Smokey and the Bandit
A bootlegger known as the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) is hired on to run a tractor-trailer full of beer over state lines, while a pesky sheriff is on his heels. Just a blast, thanks to the star power of Reynolds and co-star Sally Field, under the direction of Hal Needham. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. If you haven’t seen it lately, watch it again.
