Man shot by police after chase from Vestavia Hills to Georgia has died

A man who was shot after leading law enforcement officers on a chase from Vestavia Hills to Georgia has died.

Marcus Andrew Eaddy, 29, died Thursday, March 28, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed Tuesday.

The Luthonia, Ga., man had been hospitalized since the March 23 shooting just over the state line in Georgia.

The investigation is ongoing by the GBI.

The ordeal began in the predawn hours that Saturday when Hoover police responded to a call of shots fired at an apartment complex on Wisteria Drive.

Hoover police Capt. Keith Czeskleba said officers responded to the complex about 2 a.m. on a report that a man – later identified as Eaddy – was firing an AR-style gun.

They did not find anyone injured, and no property damage.

Investigators have since learned that Eaddy was visiting a girlfriend at the apartment and had gotten into an argument. He went outside and apparently fired shots in the air.

Vestavia Hills police officers spotted the suspect vehicle – a Chrysler 200 – and gave chase. They continued the high-speed pursuit along Interstate 65 to Interstate 20, heading eastbound.

They dropped off when the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office picked up the pursuit.

St. Clair Sheriff Billy Murray said his deputies entered the pursuit and continued eastbound on I-20.

St. Clair County deputies, Oxford police officers, Heflin police officers, the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office and the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia all took part in the chase.

During the pursuit, deputies took gunfire from the suspect and subsequently returned fire, Murray said.

Cleburne County sheriff’s officials said they were advised that the driver had been firing shots at law enforcement officers during the pursuit.

As the chase continued, Eaddy’s vehicle was traveling at extremely high speeds and was spiked by a Cleburne County deputy and a Heflin police officer.

The Chrysler continued into Georgia where it became disabled and crashed between Exit 3 and Exit 5, just over the state line.

A shootout ensued between Eaddy and deputies from Haralson and St. Clair counties, according to the GBI.

Multiple law enforcement vehicles took gunfire, but no officers were injured.

“The vehicle spun out at mile marker two and the driver opened fire on deputies and other officers, who returned fire,’’ Haralson County sheriff’s officials said in a press release.

The incident shut down parts of I-20 for several hours.

GBI officials said they found a handgun near Eaddy and an assault rifle inside his vehicle.

They are leading the investigation and once it is complete, the case will be turned over to the Haralson County District Attorney’s Office.
