Justin Thomas says playing golf with Michael Jordan ‘helped pay for my first car’
Celebrity picker on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” courtside pals with Nick Saban at Alabama basketball games, and now guest on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Justin Thomas might be busier off the golf course than he is on it these days.
Promoting the second season of the Netflix documentary series “Full Swing” (streaming now), the PGA golfer who played for the University of Alabama appeared on the late night talk show Monday as he told stories about navigating stress on the course and playing a few holes with Michael Jordan.
Chants of “JT!” as the golfer sat down inside the Ed Sullivan Theater, while the host first picked his brain about the game.
Colbert said he plays some golf and often finds it frustrating, so he asked Thomas if a pro holds himself to a higher standard. “I’d hope so,” he said. “It is my job, so I have to be good, but the frustration level is very much alive and present.”
Colbert asked if he meditates to stay in the zone. “I’ve tried,” Thomas said. “You pretty much just have to deal with it.” Colbert then comically wrote down “Deal with it” to help his own game in the future.
The host then displayed a photo of a 15-year-old Thomas playing golf with legendary basketball superstar Michael Jordan and asked how he scored that opportunity. Thomas said while growing up in Louisville, Jordan would want to play some golf while he was in town to attend the Kentucky Derby. Thomas’ father and Jordan had a mutual friend, former NBA player Junior Bridgeman, who would connect them to play rounds together.
Colbert asked Thomas if they would ever partake in any friendly wagers. Thomas said he didn’t play the first few years and would instead serve as caddie for the group. One day, Jordan asked Thomas (whom Jordan called “little man”) to play the final seven holes of the round with them. When Colbert asked if he felt any pressure to perform, Thomas said he felt enough just by playing with the 6-time NBA champion.
The host pressed Thomas to know how he did, after all. “I made four birdies in seven holes and helped pay for my first car,” he said, laughing. Thomas clarified he won upwards of $3,000 or $4,000, after which his father told him to tip Jordan’s assistant after the 36-hole day. “‘All I have is hundreds,’” Thomas recalled telling his dad. “So my dad, he was kinda messing with me. He’s like, ‘Well you gotta tip him,’ and I’m like, ‘OK,’ and I gave him a hundred, and my dad’s like ‘I can’t believe you just tipped him a hundred dollars, but that’s all I had.”
He also discussed competing in the Ryder Cup, as evidenced by a clip Colbert played from “Full Swing.”
Thomas, 30, was born in Louisville and played golf at UA, where he helped lead the team to a national title in 2013. He turned pro shortly after that and remains one of the top players on the tour. He’s since won five PGA Tour events and two major golf championships, the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022.

Thomas got a recent shout-out from an another NBA legend, when Charles Barkley congratulated “Alabama University” after the Crimson Tide’s win over Grand Canyon in the NCAA tournament. When host Ernie Johnson corrected him with “Also known as the University of Alabama,” Barkley admitted he knew what he said.
“I do that to get to Justin Thomas,” Barkley said. “He hates when I say that.”
