Spring sports roundup: Daphne softball goes 8-0 to improve to 20-1

The seventh-ranked Class 7A Trojans improved to 20-1 on the season with eight wins for the week – six on Saturday in the Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park. In a 3-0 win over Opp, Vic Moten struck out 18 batters and allowed 1 hit and no walks in 8 innings. She helped her cause in the circle with a double and an RBI.

Abby Johnson and Abby Newsom both doubled for Daphne and added an RBI each. Johnson had a pair of stolen bases. Hannah Newport also had a hit.

In a 5-1 win over St. Paul’s, Moten allowed no hits or walks and struck out 8 in 3 innings. Braylyn Swann gave up a run on 2 hits with a strikeout in 2 innings.

Johnson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs in the win. Dasia Matt and Farley Harris also had RBIs for Daphne.

Daphne blanked Spanish Fort 1-0 as Moten struck out 10, allowing 3 hits with no walks in 5 innings. She was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and 2 stolen bases. Johnson went 2-for-3 and Matt was 1-for-2 with a pair of steals. Matt also scored the lone run when she took home on an attempted pickoff at third base went awry.

The Trojans also pounded Valley 16-1 with Swann allowing a run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts in 3 innings.

Matt went 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Newport was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Kylie Stokes went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs.

In a 2-0 win over Brookwood, Moten allowed no hits in 5 innings and struck out 10. She walked 3 batters.

Matt went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double. Farley Harris also doubled for Daphne.

Daphne beat Benjamin Russell 13-0 with Campbell Hicks and Swann allowing 1 hit each. Hicks worked 3 innings and struck out 3. Swann pitched an inning and struck out 1.

Cammy Herport went 4-for-4 with a home run and 2 doubles in the win. Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double. Sophia Hunt was 2-for-3, Newport and Harris were both 2-for-4. Stokes went 2-for-2 with a double and Mariah Williams went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Piedmont 3, Bledsoe County (Tenn.) 0

The Bulldogs blanked Bledsoe County on Saturday, scoring all 3 runs in the fifth inning. Carson Young held the Pikeville, Tenn., team to 2 hits. Young recorded 1 strikeout and did not walk a batter in 6 innings.

Cayla Brothers went 1-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs for Class 3A No. 5 Piedmont. The Bulldogs also got hits from Jaycee Glover, Young, Ava Pope and Amiyah Thomas.

Cherokee County 4, Piedmont 0

Cherokee County’s Emma Hill blanked Piedmont on 1 hit on Saturday, striking out 3 and walking 1 in 3 innings. She also helped her cause in the circle with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Abby Lea went 1-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs and Annalise Walker was 1-for-3 with a run.

Carson Young got Piedmont’s lone hit. Savannah Smith was saddled with the loss, allowing 4 runs – 1 earned – on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Alcoa (Tenn.) 7, Piedmont 0

The Tornadoes blanked Piedmont with Makenna McCarter pitching a 2-hit shutout over 5 innings. She struck out 3 and walked 1.

Tori Haun went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored for Alcoa. Halle Bailey, Kara Pitts and Adrianna King were all 1-for-3 with an RBI each. Gabby Burkhart and Dylan Jablonski were 1-for-2 with an RBI each.

Savannah Smith and Amarae Champion picked up hits for Piedmont.

Smith took the loss in the circle, allowing 7 runs – 4 earned – on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk over 3.1 innings.

STATEWIDE

Brantley 4, Trinity 0

The second-ranked Class 1A Bulldogs blanked Trinity in the Alex Wilcox Memorial tournament at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park on Friday.

Brantley’s Anna Parker Little struck out 11 in 4 innings and had a pair of hits with a 2-run home run to support her effort in the circle.

Emma Crawley also had 2 hits for the Bulldogs.

Also on Friday, Beauregard edged Brantley 6-5.

Alex Grimes had a pair of home runs – one a 3-run blast – for Brantley. She finished with 4 RBIs. Mary Driggers and Kaitlyn Piggot also had hits in the loss for the Bulldogs (11-6).

SOCCER

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 7, Cache (Okla.) 0

The fourth-ranked Class 7A Bucs rolled over Cache, Okla., on Saturday in the Southern Coast Cup tournament at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex. Hoover scored all of its goals in the first half.

Elise Marquardt and Addie Bridges had 2 goals each in the runaway. Dee Dee Udeh, Sage Thomas and Bailee Dowdey scored a goal each.

Earlier on Saturday in the event, Hoover battled Loganville, Ga., to a 0-0 stalemate.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Westminster Christian 1, Huntsville 1

Top-ranked Westminster Christian stepped outside of Class 4A, Area 8 play and battled 7A Huntsville to a draw in the inaugural Rocket City Shootout at John Hunt Park on Saturday.

Westminster (7-1-1) outshot Huntsville 22-12, with several shots that came close.

Huntsville (6-4-4) scored first when Lexi Cribbet slipped through the Westminster defense, driving a shot into the left corner of the goal past Wildcat keeper Piper Blazier in the 37th minute.

It appeared Cribbet’s goal would stand up as Westminster was unable to get anything past Huntsville keeper Cecilia Smith until the 77th minute when AnnaLi Weekley scored on a header assisted by Ella Henshaw to tie the game 1-1.

After the match the University of Alabama beat Tennessee 3-1 to wrap up the Shootout.

Spanish Fort 11-14, Baldwin County 1-4

The Toros swept Baldwin County in a Class 6A, Area 2 Saturday double-header after falling 8-6 to the Tigers on Friday.

Jack Holley slapped a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning in Game 1 on Saturday for No. 7 Spanish Fort. He finished with 3 hits in the win.

Ethan Kick earned the win on the mound.

In Game 2, Lakelon Ray had a pair of hits and 5 stolen bases for Spanish Fort. Brayden Cooper also had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. John Henry Winstead had a pair of hits, including a solo home run, with 2 RBIs.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Bob Jones 11, Tuscaloosa County 4

Second-ranked Class 7A Bob Jones rallied in the fifth and sixth innings to beat Tuscaloosa County on Saturday, its second win of the day after a 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Against Tuscaloosa County, the Patriots scored 6 runs in the fifth after trailing 4-1 and added 4 more in the sixth to seal the win.

Zackary Johnson went 2-for-4 with 5 RBIs with a home run and Jacob Pearl homered and doubled, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored from his leadoff position. Dillon Atkins also had a double in the win.

Braden Booth went 2-for-4 with 3 runs and an RBI and Reece Cato was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Gage Wilson earned the win in relief of starter Jackson Shaw. Wilson struck out 4 and allowed 2 hits and no runs in 3.2 innings. Shaw gave up 4 runs – 3 earned – on 5 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks in 3.1 innings.

Jaxon Pearson and Brooks Mellown had doubles in the loss. Pearson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mellown drove in a run. Rylee Pate was 2-for-4.

Brady Jones took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing 7 runs – 4 earned – on 7 hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Mellown, the starter, gave up 4 runs – 3 earned – on 2 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout over 4 innings.

In the 1-0 win over Chelsea, the Patriots scored their run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Booth doubled and Johnson drove in the game-winning run. Pearl and Adkins also had hits for Bob Jones.

Booth was the winning pitcher, striking out 6, walking 2 and allowing 5 hits over 7 innings.

Paxton Stallings took the loss for Chelsea, allowing the earned run on 4 hits in 6 innings. He struck out 5 and walked 3. He also had a hit in 2 at-bats.

Hayden Bauman and Jackson Price were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Bauman had a double.

Madison County 8, Brewer 5

The Tigers improved to 16-4 on the season with the come-from-behind home win over Brewer on Saturday. Madison County trailed 5-2 after three innings before trying the game in the bottom of the fourth and adding a run in the fifth and 2 in the sixth.

Nick Sharp went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs for the Tigers. Lead-off hitter Jace Duckett was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored and Memphis Scott went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and a pair of RBIs. Jake Thornton had 2 RBIs, Chris Fearnside had a hit and a run scored, Connor Drake was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Ayden Deerman was 1-for-2 with a run.

Keigan McClure picked up the win with 2.2 innings in relief of starter Riley Tipton. McClure gave up 2 unearned runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Tipton struck out 3, giving up 3 runs – 2 earned – on a hit with a walk. Cole Mullins closed it out with 2 strikeouts and a hit.

Logan Paseur took the loss for the Patriots in relief of Chase Smith. Paseur allowed a pair of runs – 1 earned – on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Smith struck out 2 and walked 2, giving up 4 earned runs on 5 hits with 2 walks.

Smith was 2-for-3 with a double for Brewer. Logan Powers went 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Brayden Murphy drove in a run and was 1-for-3. Paseur was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Hartselle 12, Vestavia Hills 9

The top-ranked Class 6A Tigers overcame 7 errors, capitalizing on a pair of home runs and 4 doubles to beat No. 8 7A Vestavia Hills on Saturday. Hartselle got home runs from Peyton Steele and Cam Palahach in the win. Steele also had a pair of doubles to go 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Palahach also had 3 RBIs and scored a run.

Hartselle led 1-0 after the first inning before Vestavia tied the game in the second. The Tigers got 2 runs in the third and 5 in the fourth to lead 8-1 before the Rebels pushed across 7 runs in the fifth. Hartselle responded with 2 more in the bottom of the fifth and a pair in the sixth. Vestavia got a run in the seventh.

The Tigers also got doubles from Cade Miles and Brody Leathers. Miles was 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored with 2 RBIs and Leathers went 2-for-4 with 3 runs. Jo Williamson was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Keaton Lance was 2-for-4.

Williamson, the fourth of five Hartselle pitchers, got the win. He allowed 4 unearned runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Matthew Ledbetter took the loss for Vestavia, giving up 7 earned runs on 9 hits with a strikeout and a walk over the final 3 innings. Maximus Littleton started the game, giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Henry Tonsmeire and Carson Mann both had home runs and doubles for the Rebels. Tonsmeire was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs on the day. William Tonsmeire went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Mason Perrigo was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs. Mann went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Hartselle 12, Helena 1

Jo Williamson and Keaton Lance homered for Class 6A No. 1 Hartselle in the win over 6A No. 9 Helena Saturday morning. The Tigers exploded for 7 runs in the third inning to take an 8-1 edge and added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth in the 5-inning game.

Williamson was 1-for-1 with 4 RBIs, 3 runs scored and 3 walks in the win. Lance was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Cade Miles was 1-for-3 with 3 runs and Lawson Williams was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Asher Doepel was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Cole Miles got the win, allowing an earned run on 3 hits with 2 walks.

Brayden Dockery took the loss, allowing 8 runs – 6 earned – on 6 hits with a strikeout and 4 walks over 3 innings.

Hayden Berry was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Helena. Reece Mims also had a hit for the Huskies.

Huntsville 13-8, Florence 2-7

The Crimson Panthers swept a double-header at home on Senior Day on Saturday.

In the Game 1 win, Sims Bowman earned the win, allowing 2 earned runs with a strikeout and 3 walks.

Jacks McClung went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a double for Huntsville. Garner Farrell was 2-for-3 and Riley Moss went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs.

McClung also had a walk-off single with 2 out in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2. McClung’s hit drove in Farrell from second for the win. McClung went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

Steven Cavaco was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Huntsville. Chase Cartron smacked a 3-run homer in the third and Farrell was 2-for-3.

Cavaco allowing 5 runs – 2 earned – with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 innings. Reece Thomas got the win in relief striking out 1 in one-third of an inning.

BIRMINGHAM

Spain Park 7-7, James Clemens 3-6

Ninth-ranked Class 7A Spain Park swept a Saturday double-header over James Clemens, with a pair of big innings deciding both games.

In Game 1, the Jaguars rallied from a 2-1 deficit with 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the fifth.

In Game 2, James Clemens led 5-2 after three innings, but Spain Park pushed across 4 in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-5. The Jets scored a run in the top of the seventh, but the home team scored the game-winner with 1 out in the bottom of the seventh.

Three James Clemens pitchers held Spain Park to 3 hits in the first game, but the Jaguars scored 3 unearned runs and walked 5 times.

James Battersby went 1-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored for the winners. Matthew Widra doubled in 2 at-bats, drove in a run and scored a run. Evan Bistritz was 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI. Arnold Bush was 0-for-3 but he drove in 2 runs. Aide Berke also had an RBI.

Blake Patrick earned the win, allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5 innings.

Satchel Wheeler took the loss for James Clemens, giving up 5 runs – 3 earned – on 1 hit with a strikeout and 3 walks.

Francisco Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Jets. Carson Loosier, Matthew Drinkwater and David Sharp all had singles. Sharp and Hayden Markfort also scored in the loss.

In Game 2, both clubs managed just 2 hits each. Spain Park’s Widra went 1-for-3 with a home run, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Samuel Waldrop went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Markfort was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Ramirez was 1-for-4 for James Clemens.

Lucas Harvey, the third of four pitchers for Spain Park, earned the win. He allowed an earned run on no hits with a strikeout and 3 walks in 3.2 innings. Starter Patrick McQueeney gave up 4 earned runs on a single hit with 3 strikeouts and 5 walks in 2 innings.

Luke Davenport took the loss for the Jets, allowing 4 runs – 1 earned – on no hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Starter Cade McComb gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit with 5 strikeouts and 5 walks.

John Carroll 6, St. Clair County 0

Four Cavaliers – Hayden Greer, Garrett Barnes, Jackson Miller and Noah Smith – combined on a no-hitter at home on Saturday to shut out St. Clair County.

Max Plaia led John Carroll at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Braxton Williams went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.

On Friday, John Carroll routed Holtville 19-4 on the road.

Aden Malpass went 4-for-5 with a double and 2 RBIs. Carson McFadden went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Mark Pillitteri was 3-for-5 with a triple and a pair of RBIs.

BIRMINGHAM

Oak Mountain 4, Chelsea 2

Top-ranked Class 7A Oak Mountain rallied from a 2-0 deficit to knock off No. 3 Chelsea in an Area 6 road contest on Friday. Chelsea scored its goals in the first 10 minutes of the match.

Aidan Riley recorded a hat trick for the Eagles.

Gerardo Rodriguez scored Oak Mountain’s first goal off a Gabe Capocci assist. Riley scored the second on a penalty kick. Five minutes later, he added a second on an unassisted run, driving from midfield before slotting home at the near post. His hat trick goal came from a Sam Collins assist when the pair broke away from midfield and combined on a 2-on-2 showdown to put the game away with 10 minutes left.

Alexander Chaide Cruz had 2 saves to earn the win in goal.

Luke Miller and Max Wever scored goals for Chelsea. Javi Rivera-Miranda had an assist.

Bob Jones boys win Northridge Invitational

The Bob Jones boys’ track and field squad won the title in the 20-team Northridge-Jaguar Invitational track and field meet in Tuscaloosa this weekend, out-pointing the host team 136-124. Sparkman finished third with 87 points.

Bob Jones and Northridge tied for first in the girls’ competition with Sparkman taking third. The Patriots and Northridge finished with 140 points each while Sparkman had 113.
