Live Updates: Alabama faces Grand Canyon for trip to Sweet 16

Alabama will be playing for a chance at a trip to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four NCAA Tournament trips as the No. 4 seed faces No. 12 seed Grand Canyon. Tipoff is set for 6:10 p.m. central time at Spokane Arena in Spokane, Washington.

The game will be aired on TBS.

Alabama advanced here by beating No. 13 seed Charleston 109-96 in the first round Friday night. Grand Canyon upset No. 5 seed Saint Mary’s for its first win in NCAA Tournament history.

It’s a mid-major program with a huge student turnout at the Saint Mary’s game and quickly flooded Spokane Arena when doors opened before facing Alabama.

It will essentially be as if Alabama was playing a road game.

Grand Canyon’s story though may not be the prototypical March Cinderella. It’s been a quick rise in basketball following a huge influx of funding. But that comes alongside significant federal allegations in its academics.

Grand Canyon, like Alabama, has a high scoring offense. The point total line for bettors is sitting near 170 on most books.

Follow along below for updates.

First Half

– Alabama will start Mark Sears, Rylan Griffen, Latrell Wrightsell, Aaron Estrada and Grant Nelson — the usual bunch. Crimson Tide lose the opening tip. Underway in Spokane

– Grand Canyon misses its first five shots of the game. Rylan Griffen picked up a steal as well. A good start for the maligned Crimson Tide defense.

– At the first media timeout, both offenses are really struggling. Alabama and Grand Canyon are a combined 3-21 from the field. And it’s not exactly like it’s been lockdown defense for either side. Both Alabama and Grand Canyon have missed several wide open shots. Alabama has missed four lay ups, three of which were not particularly contested. This hasn’t been the efficient offense Alabama has been accustomed to. Alabama hasn’t scored at all in the last 2:29. Crimson Tide lead 6-3 with 15:00 left in the first half.

Pregame

– Latrell Wrightsell Jr. is warming up for the game after missing Saturday’s practice. He took an elbow to face in Alabama’s win over Charleston and had cotton in his nose to stop bleeding during his press conference following the game.
