Nearly 30 years ago, there was a contest held in Mobile aimed a discovering a nickname for the new minor league hockey franchise that would start playing its home games inside the Mobile Civic Center.

The winner: Mysticks, which pays homage to Mobile’s Mardi Gras heritage of mystic societies that fill downtown with rollicking parades and glittering balls during the Carnival season.
