63-year-old man found slain Saturday morning in Birmingham

A 63-year-old man was found slain Saturday morning in Birmingham’s Elyton Village community.

North Precinct officers were dispatched at 8:19 a.m. to a report of a person down in the 400 block of First Street West.

They arrived to find Roderick Levann Davis unresponsive on the ground. He had apparent facial abrasions, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and pronounced Davis dead.

Wade said a passerby made the initial 911 call. It was initially believed that he had died from natural causes and that the abrasions were caused when he fell to the ground.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office notified investigators shortly before 10:30 a.m. that Davis had been physically assaulted and was the victim of a homicide.

No arrests have been made.

There have been 14 homicides in Birmingham so far this month, including seven homicides between Saturday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 19, and 12 over an 11-day stretch.

Police Chief Scott Thurmond earlier this week addressed the recent spate of violence.

In March 2023, there were 12 homicides in the city over the course of the entire month.
