Former Alabama defensive back waived in UFL cuts

In preparation for the kickoff to the United Football League campaign, the eight teams are reducing their 58-player training-camp rosters to the regular-season limit of 50.

Three teams got that done on Thursday, and former Alabama defensive back Jared Mayden was among the 24 players placed on waivers. The Arlington Renegades released Mayden.

Mayden played at Alabama from 2016 through 2019.

Mayden spent the 2020 NFL season on San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad as an undrafted rookie. He got on the field as a practice-squad elevation for 12 special-teams plays apiece in two games.

Mayden was on San Francisco’s practice squad for the first five weeks of the 2021 season. Eight days safter the 49ers released him, Mayde joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad for the remainder of the season.

Mayden played in four of Philadelphia’s final six regular-season games, including getting his first defensive work. Mayden was on the field for 38 defensive snaps and 62 special-teams plays for the Eagles in 2021.

In 2022, Mayden went on injured reserve with an undisclosed ailment during Philadelphia’s training camp. Released from IR on Sept. 20, Mayden spent four weeks on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad and eight weeks on the New York Jets’ practice squad before the Bills signed him to their active roster after safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite being on the rosters of three NFL teams in 2022, Mayden did not play in a game.

In 2023, Buffalo released Mayden as it reduced its preseason roster to the regular-season limit.

Along with Arlington, the D.C. Defenders and Houston Roughnecks announced their cuts. Thursday’s transactions leave seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges heading into the UFL regular season with the three teams:
