Tarrant to begin enforcing youth curfew amid ‘several crimes’ involving minors
The City of Tarrant will begin enforcing a 2009 ordinance instituting a youth curfew “due to several crimes being observed and reported involving juveniles,” police said.
Under the 2009 ordinance, minors must be home by 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Several exceptions to the curfew include youth working during curfew hours, minors who are accompanied by a parent or guardian or if there is a legitimate emergency.
“We are simply informing legal guardians that it is now being enforced due to several crimes being observed and reported involving juveniles within our corporate limits beyond the already specified time frames,” said Tarrant police Sgt. Derrick Williamson.
A parent or guardian or establishment cited for a minor violating the curfew could be fined at least $100 for the first offense and between $200 and $500 for a second violation.
Car break-ins in areas where teens have been congregating at night have been cited among the crimes experiencing an uptick that led to the curfew being enforced, according to ABC 33/40.
It remains unclear when police will stop enforcing the ordinance.
