Observations from Alabama’s 2nd open practice session of spring

Alabama football opened up a portion of practice to the media on Thursday. It was the second such viewing session since Kalen DeBoer opted to reinstate a practice the Crimson Tide ended in 2021 under Nick Saban.

Thursday’s session was the first since Alabama returned from spring break. It was the fifth spring practice overall, out of the 15 the Crimson Tide is allowed to hold.

DeBoer is scheduled to hold a press conference following the conclusion of practice. Before that, here are some notes from the open portion.

Practice notes

– DeBoer looked to be spending much of his time with the Crimson Tide’s quarterbacks, as expected. The group was far away from the area where media members were allowed to stand, but starter Jalen Milroe largely looked sharp from a distance.

– Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack was with the linebackers. Wommack remains an animated presence during practice, imploring one player to “See where the ball is thrown and run to that F—— cone,” almost as soon as media members began viewing drills.

– Tight end CJ Dippre had been in a black non-contact jersey during the previous open practice viewing session, before spring break. He was back to normal uniform on Thursday, and appeared to be fully participating.

– Wide receiver Germie Bernard, who transferred in from Washington this offseason, was wearing a black jersey. He spent most of the session on an exercise bike.

– Inside linebacker Sterling Dixon was in a black non-contact jersey. He appeared to be participating in drills.

– Defensive lineman Jehiem Oatis was not spotted on the practice field. He was also not seen participating with the Tide

– Selections from the practice playlist included Key Glock’s “Ambition for Cash,” Pop Smoke’s “Dior” and Bossman DLow’s “Get In With Me.” The speakers for the music had moved, from the concrete area near the indoor practice facility, toward where a field was fenced off for construction.

– Defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist was throwing passes to Alabama’s cornerbacks in on drill. The group seemed to be focusing on catching the ball at the high point. Freshman Jaylen Mbakwe made a nice catch on the sideline during that drill.

–It was 74 degrees and cloudy in Tuscaloosa during the observation period. Players largely went through individual and group drills during the media time.
