Buckhorn sophomore star named Gatorade Alabama Player of Year
The awards keep rolling in for Buckhorn’s Caleb Holt.
The sophomore was named Gatorade’s Alabama Player of the Year on Thursday. Earlier this month, Holt was named the MaxPreps Alabama Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-6 forward led the Bucks to a second straight Class 6A state title this season. He is a two-time first-team All-State player and a finalist to repeat as 6A Player of the Year. He is the first Gatorade Player of the Year from Buckhorn.

He also is believed to be one of the leading contender’s to be the state’s Mr. Basketball, which will be announced April 16 in Montgomery.
“Athletically, he’s about as good as I’ve seen,” former Jacksonville State head coach and Alabama Sports Hall of Fame member Bill Jones said following Holt’s 37-point performance in the state semifinals. “He’s so quick. I’m sitting on the floor behind the basket. He stole a ball right in front of me and in three dribbles he’s on the other end of the floor. He’s an exceptional talent.”
For the season, Holt averaged 20.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.4 assists per game. He is ranked as the No. 3 national prospect in the class of 2026, according to 247 sports. He also was a gold medalist with the Under 16 Men’s National Team at the 2023 FIBA Americas Championships in Mexico. He concluded his sophomore year with 1,798 points in his prep basketball career
“Caleb is a great player,” said Chris Richardson, head coach of Clay-Chalkville High School in the Gatorade release. “He fills every stat column along with being an unbelievable leader as a sophomore.”
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
Spring Garden junior Ace Austin was named the Gatorade Alabama girls Player of the Year last week.
The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
Previous Gatorade boys winners include Baker’s Labaron Philon, McGill-Toolen’s Barry Dunning, Calhoun’s JD Davison and Mountain Brook’s Trendon Watford.
