McDonald’s is the world’s largest restaurant chain. And now, there’s a new second
Starbucks has surpassed Subway to become the world’s second-largest restaurant chain.
The coffee retailer surpassed Subway last year, according to data from Technomic. As of the end of last year, there were 38,587 Starbucks locations worldwide, while Subway’s total count came in at just 36,516, reports FORTUNE.
At one time, Subway had more global locations than any restaurant chain but it closed 6,000 U.S. stores between 2015 and 2021. Starbucks on the other hand, added nearly 3,000 stores.
McDonald’s is the largest restaurant chain in the world, with 41,822 locations, about a third of which are in the U.S. The fast food chain saw sales of roughly $120 billion last year, according to FORTUNE.
Subway may have dropped on the global count list, it still has the most locations in the U.S. Quartz reported Starbucks and McDonald’s had about 15,000 and 13,000 locations nationwide, respectively, compared to Subway’s 20,000 restaurants. Starbucks had previously passed Subway in annual sales by several billion dollars despite Subway having roughly 25% more locations in the U.S.
