8-year-old injured in hit-and-run expected to make full recovery, mother says

A young Baldwin County girl struck by an SUV in an apparent hit-and-run incident Monday morning will make a full recovery, the child’s mother said on social media.

The 8-year-old, a student at Elberta Elementary School, was waiting on a bus when she was struck by a dark-colored SUV, which then fled the scene.

The girl was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., where she was diagnosed with multiple broken bones, as well as a concussion. Police described the injuries as life-threatening.

Later Monday, however, the girl’s mother, Kacey Hamberger Griffin, posted to the Elberta Police Department’s Facebook page that her daughter would recover, as well as her thanks for the community support.

“I’m the little girls mom I just wanted to let everyone know she is doing ok and will make a full recovery,” Griffin wrote. “We wanted to thank all the people who help(ed) at the accident scene, and all the people of the community who have prayed for our little girl.

“We have received so many calls and messages from people we don’t even know people from the community who are just really nice people willing to help and do whatever it takes and we really appreciate it.”

Meanwhile, the suspected driver, 33-year-old Katherine Elizabeth Rolek of Elberta, remains in Baldwin County Jail under $31,000 bond. She is charged with first-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless endangerment.

Rolek is a resident of Krehling Road, where the incident occurred, according to the Baldwin County Jail docket.

If convicted, Rolek faces up to 31 years in prison and fines up to $51,000.
