Male shot dead in Ensley; 6th Birmingham homicide victim since Saturday

A male was found shot to death early Monday evening in the middle of a street in Ensley, police said.

The homicide is the sixth in Birmingham since Saturday.

West Precinct officers were dispatched on a ShotSpotter alert — indicating that shots had been fired — in the 1600 block of 27th Street Ensley around 5:20 p.m. Monday, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers at the scene found a male lying unresponsive in the roadway in the 2700 block of Avenue P, said Fitzgerald.

The victim, only identified by police as a “young male” — they have yet to identify him and were unsure whether he was a juvenile or an adult — was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Police have few leads in the homicide case, and no suspects were in custody as of early Monday evening.

“Currently, our officers are working to piece together what took place that led to the victim being shot,” Fitzgerald said. “From what we observed at the scene, we believe the shooting took place near where the victim was located, and that’s based on shell casings in the roadway.”

But Fitzgerald noted that the deadly shooting took place in a heavily populated residential area, and he urged anyone with information on the homicide to call CrimeStoppers at 205-254-7777. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

On Saturday afternoon, a man was shot to death on Fourth Avenue West in the Bush Hills community. Later that night, another man was found fatally shot on Vassar Avenue on the east side.
