Teen capital murder suspect arrested after ‘tense’ 2-hour standoff in Sylacauga

A 16-year-old capital murder suspect was taken into custody Monday after a two-hour standoff in Sylacauga.

Jamir De’Jawn “JD” Russ is charged with two counts of capital murder in the February slaying of Temekia Fluker.

The warrants were issued for charges of shooting from a vehicle and shooting into an occupied residence, both resulting in Fluker’s death, said Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson.

The deadly shooting was the second in two years at the same home. Authorities said Fluker was not the intended target.

Russ was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. on Hawk Lane.  Multiple agencies took part in the arrest including the Talladega County Drug Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office, and Sylacauga police.

The chief described the standoff as “tense” but said Russ surrendered peacefully after two hours.

He thanked all involved and also thanked the community for its patience during the standoff.

The shooting happened Feb. 26 at 306 South Main Avenue.

Officers arrived to find Fluker dead inside her home. She had been shot at least once.

Investigators worked throughout the night taking statements from witnesses and collecting evidence from the crime scene.

Johnson said several rounds had been fired into the home, striking Fluker.

The chief said Fluker’s death was the second murder that has happened at or near the residence involving a member of the Fluker family.

On July 1, 2022, 22-year-old, Nartavius Cortez Fluker-Smith was shot and killed while sitting in his vehicle in front of this residence. He was Fluker’s brother.

In the earlier case, 19-year-old Sheridan Rashon Clark is awaiting trial for capital murder and remains held without bond.

Johnson said Fluker’s murder “deeply saddened and shocked the community.”

“The loss of Tamekia Fluker is a tragedy that has deeply affected our community,’’ Johnson said. “Our department has been working tirelessly to investigate this case.”
