Spring sports roundup: Big weekend for Madison City Schools baseball
It was a big weekend for Madison City Schools baseball as James Clemens won going away on Friday thanks to a no-hitter and Bob Jones swept a pair of games on Saturday to give its head coach his 300th – and 301st – career victories.
Satchel Wheeler twirled the no-hitter for the Jets in a 7-0 win over Father Ryan of Nashville.
Bob Jones shut out Hoover 2-0 in the first of a pair of games Saturday to give Jared Smith his 300th win in his 11th season as a head coach.
James Clemens 7, Father Ryan (Tenn.) 0
Left-hander Satchel Wheeler recorded the 7-inning no-hitter in the win on Friday as the Jets improved to 15-5 on the season.
The senior faced 25 batters and struck out 10 in the win, throwing 70 strikes on 114 pitches. Wheeler walked 4 batters.
David Sharp was 1-for-3 for James Clemens with a pair of RBIs. Francisco Ramirez drove in a run, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and a pair of walks. Cade McComb drove in a run and scored a run. Carson Loosier was 1-for-2, Hayden Markfort went 1-for-3 and John Johnson was 1-for-2.
Jack Halloran took the loss for Father Ryan, giving up 4 runs – 3 earned – with a pair of strikeouts and 3 walks. Matthew Shorey, who pitched the final 2 innings, struck out 6.
James Clemens also beat Decatur Heritage 7-3 on Friday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit over the last 3 innings.
Tyler Lewis picked up the win in relief of Cody Hodges. Lewis held the Eagles scoreless over 3.2 innings, striking out 6, giving up 4 hits and walking 1. Hodges gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk.
McComb tripled in 3 at-bats and scored a run for the Jets. Loosier was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Markfort was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Johnson also had 2 hits in the win.
Paxton Tarver took the loss for Decatur Heritage, allowing 4 runs – 1 earned – on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts in 5 innings. He also went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
Bo Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a double for the Eagles. Harrison Hardy, Olsen Howard, Dylan Germany and Jack Sims also had hits for Decatur Heritage.

Bob Jones 2, Hoover 0
Jared Smith’s Jets ran his record in his ninth season at Bob Jones to 257-118 with a pair of shutouts on Saturday – the win over Hoover and a 13-0 rout of Sardis. Smith was 44-34 in two seasons at Dothan in 2014-15 and is now 301-152 in his career.
In the 300th win, Bob Jones scored both of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Braden Booth struck out 13 Hoover batters, allowing 2 hits over 6.2 innings and walked 5. Dillon Adkins closed out the game, allowing a hit and ending it with a strikeout.
Reece Cato doubled in 2 at-bats, Jacob Pearl went 1-for-3 with a run and Zackary Johnson drove in a run for the winners.
Mason Blasche went 2-for-4 with a double for Hoover and Will Adams had the other hit for the Bucs.
Adams was saddled with the loss, giving up 2 unearned runs on 2 hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out 12 and walked 2.
In Win No. 301 for Smith, the Patriots blanked Sardis 13-0. Bob Jones erupted for 8 runs in the bottom of the first, added 4 more runs in the second and closed out the 5-inning win with a run in the fourth.
Three Patriots combined on a 1-hitter, with starter Adkins striking out 6 and walking 5 with no hits through 3 innings. Aidan Panagos worked a scoreless and hitless inning with a strikeout and Dominic Rosa allowed a hit with 2 strikeouts and a walk in the final inning.
Bob Jones got doubles from Pearl, Adkins and Robert Chatmon, who drove in 3 runs.
Bryson Blevins had a double for the lone Sardis hit.
Carson Gillian took the loss, giving up 8 runs – 4 earned – on 5 hits and walked 3 in two-thirds of an inning. Andrew Felter allowed 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks in 1.1 innings. Cason Tumlin allowed a run on a hit with 2 walks in 2 innings.

Madison County 2, Whitesburg Christian 1
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and held off Whitesburg Christian at home on Saturday. Nick Sharp went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Chris Fearnside was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Madison County.
Cole Mullins also had hits in the win.
Jace Duckett picked up the win, striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 4 hits in 5 innings. Riley Tipton allowed a run on 2 hits in relief and Jake Thornton struck out 5 in 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and walking a batter, to close out the win.
Kaleb Robinson took the loss for Whitesburg Christian, allowing 2 unearned runs on 3 hits with a strikeout in 2 innings. Robinson also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Andrew Summers, Luke Holbrook, Tate Walker, Evan Dodd and Brooks Cochran also had hits for the Warriors.
Also on Saturday, Madison County blanked DAR 11-0 as Sharp and Keigan McClure combined to no-hit the Patriots in the 5-inning game. Sharp got the win in 3 innings with 5 strikeouts and a walk. McClure also struck out 5.
Mullens, Duckett, Thornton and William Bibb all had doubles for the Tigers. Duckett, Fearnside and Mullens drove in 2 runs apiece. Bibb, Moon and Thornton had an RBI each.
Zaylon Rice took the loss for DAR, giving up 11 runs – 10 earned – on 7 hits in 3 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 6.
Hartselle 5-4, Oxford 0-9
The Tigers split a double-header with Oxford at home on Saturday to run their record to 11-4 on the season.
In Game 1, Hartselle scored all its runs in the bottom of the third. Josey Williamson and Cameron Palahach homered in the win, with Williamson driving in 3 runs and Palahach getting an RBI. Lawrence Williams, Andrew Coleman and Asher Doepel also had hits for the Tigers.
Landon Blackwood earned the win, allowing 2 hits in 4 innings with a strikeout and a walk. Carson Wilson gave up 2 hits in 3 innings with a strikeout.
RJ Brooks took the loss for Oxford, allowing 5 runs – 3 earned – on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Brooks also had a double as did Tide Gann, who was 2-for-3 at the plate. James Tapley also went 1-for-1 for the Yellow Jackets.
In Oxford’s 9-4 Game 2 win, the Yellow Jackets jumped to a 3-0 first-inning lead and went up 6-1 after two.
Nick Richardson doubled and had an RBI, Forrest Heacock was 1-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and Hudson Gilman went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Brooks and Canaan Whitman also had RBIs in the win.
Richardson was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits in 4 innings. Whitman gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Jace Meadows took the loss for Hartselle, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 inning.
Peyton Steele homered with Brody Leathers and Chris Miles smacking doubles for the Tigers. Leathers, Palahach, Keaton Lance and Steele had RBIs. Lance was 2-for-2 and Miles went 2-for-4.
BIRMINGHAM
Pleasant Grove 18, Tarrant 3
The Spartans scored 6 runs in each inning of the 3-inning rout of Tarrant on Saturday.
Daylon Parks went 2-for-2 with a triple and 2 runs scored for Pleasant Grove. Kaleb Freeman doubled in 3 at-bats and drove in 4 runs. Timothy Blue was 2-for-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. TJ Thompson went 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Kelbi Tunstall was 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run.
Parks gave up 3 runs – 2 earned – on 2 hits in 2.1 innings for Pleasant Grove. He struck out 1 and walked 2. Ryan Hammett struck out 2 in two-thirds of an inning.
Syncere Terry was stuck with the loss for Tarrant, allowing 18 runs – 7 earned – on 11 hits.
Taylen Johnson got both of Tarrant’s hits, going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Andre Raines also scored a run.
Pleasant Grove also beat Huffman 15-4 on Saturday in a 5-inning game. The Spartans had 10 hits to 5 for Huffman and capitalized on 6 Vikings’ errors. Pleasant Grove had 3 errors in the win.
Andre Watts was 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Parks went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Blue and Mykel Toole drove in 2 runs each and Kenyon Gunn, John Fletcher, and Freeman all had an RBI.
Chris Morris had a pair of hits for Huffman. Austin Davis took the loss for the Vikings, allowing 9 runs – 1 earned – in 3 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 2.
Mountain Brook 3-6, Cullman 0-5
Mountain Brook swept the road double-header on Saturday to improve to 15-2 on the year with John Littleton and Kenneth Diddell combining on a 1-hitter in the 3-0 win.
Littleton struck out 7 and walked a batter in 6 innings, giving up the hit to Cullman lead-off batter Jonah Inman. Diddell struck out 1 in his single inning on the mound.
James Graphos went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Spartans. Samuel Estes was 2-for-4 with a run. Bennett Love and Matthew Payne also had RBIs in the win.
In Mountain Brook’s 6-5 win, Cullman out-hit the Spartans 10-8 but the Bearcats committed 3 errors to 1 for Mountain Brook. The home team led 2-1 after one inning and 4-2 after 3. Mountain Brook pushed across 4 runs in the top of the sixth and Cullman could only respond with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
Graphos went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run for the Spartans. Estes was 2-for-4 with a run. Hunter Keller scored twice and had an RBI, Becker Mayor and Brooks Allen drove in a run each.
Bodi Brumfield earned the win, striking out 3 in 3 shutout innings of relief.
Inman went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs for Cullman. Tanner Gaines was also 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Carson Stancil was 2-for-3.
Starter Brian Loftin struck out 2 and allowed 2 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits. Fysher Dahlke struck out 3 in 3 innings.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Saraland 5, Madison Academy 2
Evan Hilliard struck out 6 to pick up the home win on Saturday. Hilliard helped his cause with a hit and an RBI.
Camron Laffitte had a 2-out, 2-run single that put Saraland up for good in the game. Jamison Curtis had 2 hits and an RBI and Cam Warren also had a hit and an RBI.
Brooks Womble, Santae McWilliams and Mike Smith all had hits and scored runs for the 13-4 Spartans.
SOCCER
Hoover 2, Dothan 0
Conrad Hernandez scored off a Patrick Anderson corner kick in the 20th minute of the first half as Hoover beat Dothan on Saturday.
Reese Kearney scored on a header in the second half for the final score.
Hoover plays at John Carroll on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
North Jackson 16, Woodville 0
The Chiefs scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first on the way to the 3-inning shutout on Saturday.
Winning pitcher Allie Benson worked 2 innings, allowing 1 hit with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Avery Wynne pitched the third with an identical line – 3 K’s, a walk and a hit.
Haley Eldridge had a home run for North Jackson, going 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs. Peyton Malley tripled and drove in a run. Wynne, Benson, Allison Ferguson and Malloree Grider all had doubles. Benson was 1-for-1 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Ferguson and Burton scored 3 times each.
Jerzey Jones got both of Woodville’s hits in 2 at-bats with a double. Ruthie McLaughlin gave up 12 runs – 6 earned – with 5 walks and a strikeout to take the loss.
North Jackson also beat Pisgah 4-3 on Saturday, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth – and final – inning after tying the game at 3 in the bottom of the fifth. The Chiefs scored 3 unearned runs in the win and had just 2 hits on the day.
Malley and Darcy McClendon got the hits with Malley driving in a pair of runs. McClendon was the winning pitcher, going the distance and striking out 12. She allowed 3 runs – 2 unearned – and walked 2.
Piper Anderson took the loss for Pisgah, giving up 4 runs – 3 unearned – on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and 5 walks.
The Chiefs also beat North Sand Mountain 8-1 on Saturday, with Wynne smacking a solo home run while going 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
Ferguson and Malley had doubles for North Jackson with Ferguson driving in a pair of runs. McClendon also drove in a run and earned the win in the circle. She gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts.
Caybree Dobbins was saddled with the loss for North Sand Mountain, allowing 6 earned runs on 8 hits in 4.1 innings. She struck out 3 and walked 3.
Cloey Davenport, Kendall Williamson and Cara Holder all doubled for the Bison. Williamson was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Skyline 5, North Jackson 0
The Vikings blanked North Jackson at home on Saturday as Olivia Treece held the Chiefs to 2 hits and struck out 6 over 5 innings. She walked 4 batters.
Brinlee Potts had a pair of triples for Skyline and drove in 2 runs. Jayla Ross and Sage Lewis doubled in the win, with Lewis going 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs.
Avery Wynne was 1-for-1 with a double for North Jackson while Allison Ferguson went 1-for-3.
Millee Grider gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits to take the loss.
Brooks 2, Winfield 0
Abigail Herndon struck out 10 Pirates on Saturday to pick up the shutout win for Brooks. Herndon allowed 2 hits and walked 2 and had a home run and a double with a pair of RBIs.
Harmony Behel, Brayleigh Leone and Callie McCord also had hits for Brooks.
The Lions also beat Haleyville 8-0 on Saturday as Herndon struck out 8 and gave up 3 hits in 5 innings. She also went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
P Bunch tripled and drove in 3 runs, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. A Johnson doubled in 3 at-bats with a run scored.
West Limestone 12, Brooks 9
Abigail Herndon and J Edwards homered for Brooks, but it wasn’t enough in the loss to West Limestone on Saturday. Edwards was 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run scored while Herndon was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Hatton Behel gave up 6 earned runs on 4 hits in two-thirds of an inning for Brooks. A Johnson struck out 5 and walked 6, allowing 6 earned runs on 6 hits.
Piedmont 6, Woodland 1
Cayla Brothers and Carson Young were both 2-for-3 at the plate as the Bulldogs beat Woodland on Saturday. Brothers had a double and drove in a run.
Savannah Smith, Cacey Brothers, Young and Eliza Mathis all had an RBI for Piedmont.
Young was the winning pitcher, allowing a run on 7 hits with a strikeout.
Marie Taylor went 2-for-2 for Woodland. Ella Waites, Railey Williams, Emma Elsberry, Alyssa Taylor and Lillian Robertson had singles in the loss.
Taylor took the loss, allowing 3 runs – 1 earned – on 4 hits with 3 walks. Williams gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts.
Also on Saturday, Piedmont edged Hixon, Tenn., 6-5, rallying from a 5-4 deficit after 2 innings. Piedmont tied the game in the third and pushed across the game-winner in the fifth inning of the 6-inning game.
Cacey Brothers had a 2-run homer for the Bulldogs. Young was 3-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBIs. Cadence Buttram also had an RBI.
Smith earned the win, allowing 5 runs – none earned – on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Satsuma 8, Thomasville 0
The Gators went 4-1 in tournament play on Saturday and improved to 20-2-1 on the season. In the win over Thomasville, Madison Sawyer struck out 11 and walked none in the 4-hit, 5-inning shutout. Sawyer also helped her cause in the circle with a home run.
Anna Jo Bonds and Presley Willis also had home runs from Satsuma. Ashleigh Parker had 2 RBIs in the win.
The Gators beat Sweet Water 10-0 as Bonds struck out 6 and walked 2, allowing 3 hits in 4 innings. She went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs at the plate.
Sawyer was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Haley Jones was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Bralee Byrd went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored.
Satsuma also shut out Leroy 5-0 as Belle Sheffield allowed 5 hits over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. She went 2-for-3 at the plate. Sawyer was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Sawyer picked up another win, 1-0 over St. Paul’s, with a 2-hit shutout. She allowed 2 hits, struck out 8 and walked none.
Willis drove in the only run with a solo home run in the 6th inning. She was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
Madeline Howard took the loss for St. Paul’s, striking out 8 while allowing 6 hits in 6 innings with a walk.
Baker 6, Satsuma 5
The Hornets scored a run in the 6th – and final – inning as time expired to hand Satsuma the loss. Katlyn Cone had a 3-run homer and Klaire Frost had a pair of hits for Baker.
A Gators rally fell short with a runner stranded on second.
Madison Sawyer took the loss, allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks in 3 innings. Belle Sheffield had 2 hits and Bralee Byrd had 2 RBIs for Satsuma.
STATEWIDE
Brantley 3, Pike Road 1
Anna Parker Little struck out 9 in 5 innings as Brantley topped Pike Road in a tournament at Geneva. Little also helped her effort with a double at the plate.
Alex Grimes had a 3-run home run for Brantley.
Brantley also fell 3-0 to Wicksburg in the tournament. Little struck out 6 in the loss.
Zion Chapel beat Brantley 9-1 in the tourney.
SOCCER
BIRMINGHAM
Hoover 3, Dothan 0
The Class 7A fourth-ranked Bucs blanked No. 9 Dothan on Saturday, jumping to a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Dee Dee Udeh and Elise Marquardt. Marquardt, who scored on a free kick, had an assist on Udeh’s goal.
Julie Cooke scored on an assist from Udeh in the second half.
