ICYMI Birmingham: REV expansion, Alexander Shunnarah and dancin’ Bulldogs
Sundays can be days for catching up on things, including local stories you may have missed in last week’s daily digital editions of The Birmingham News. So, to help you out, here are some of the stories our readers found most interesting.
REV expands business district: Two communities in downtown Birmingham should be seeing vast improvements this summer as they join the city’s expanding Business Improvement District. Starting in July, downtown revitalization nonprofit REV Birmingham will be rolling out new sanitation and public outreach services in Five Points South and The Switch (a multiblock area downtown surrounding Innovation Depot), after adding the two districts to Birmingham’s BID in December. Lede reporter Heather Gann told the story.
“Man of the people”: Nearly two decades ago a Birmingham attorney decided to up his advertising game, without realizing the move would make him a household name across the southeast. Heather Gann had this Q&A with the ubiquitous Alexander Shunnarah.
Samford men’s basketball: Bucky McMillan has never competed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Not as a player and not as a coach. Not that he’s had all that many chances. Before the Samford men won Southern Conference Tournament to punch their ticket to the Big Dance, Kevin Scarbinsky wrote about how the coach and the team were built for the moment.
